Yesterday I went up to Mille Lacs and this this relates to problem #1 from my previous post last week.

Ok here is the problem. I was on the water at 3 pm fished spot #1 caught one eye nothing for about an hour so moved, unit worked fine. Over the couse of the next four hours or so I moved another 3-4 times and the unit stayed on every time I would start the motor until I started the motor the last time to go in, then it went to the start up initialize page and quickly came back to current position.

I just purchased an interstate cranking battery, it is a group 24 1,000 cranking amp battery and it had a full charge to it when I left home. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance Perchhead

Had the same problem last month. After checking all the connections 2x and wiring forgot the KISS method “keep it simple stupid.” Wing nut on new battery I had just put in worked its way loose. Check the wingnuts if loose tighten firm or better yet replace with locking nuts.

Sounds like a weak connection or depending on motor size it may be to much inrush current draw from the motor for the sensitive electornics. I would put them on an auxiliary battery…

    Menu>Menu>Page>Edit Overlay.

Then with the soft keys Press Add…Go down to other and select INTERNAL VOLTAGE.

Follow the directions to edit the size and location.

Then start your motor and watch your voltage. If it drops below 10v it’s your rig. If not, time for a repair.

Bk when you say repair are you talking about the HDS-5 unit being in need of repair.

    3 things come to mind
    1. Did you direct wire the units power to the battery with an inline fuse or did you come off the fuse block. I would not install a finder off the block.
    2. 24 size can often be too small to keep the unit running and crank over the motor. min of 27 for me, you get a much longer draw for radios and finders.
    3. what motor are you cranking? (model and make)

Also like BK mentioned actuvate a on screen voltage and watch it as you start the motor. If it is low and direct wired get a 27 series and sell the 24 size battery. -Mark

Go to http://www.lowrance.com and check product updates. Lowrance came out with an update 3.0 for all HDS units. Update your HDS 5 and it may help with the rebooting of the unit you are talking about.

I am cranking johnson 2001 115 hp. The locator is not wired to the fuse box to my knowledge as the red positive has in line fuse to it. I am running a series 24 because the area under my splash well I dont think I could fit a series 27 and the only difference between the 24 and 27 the 27 is 135 reserve amps on the 24 vs 180 reserve amps on the the 27 both of these sre 1,000 cranking amp batterys. And I jsut did the software update on Monday. You should be able to get more than 5-6 hours of just running your locator only.

HDS’s operate down to 10 volts. If your voltage is dropping below that your problem is in the rig.

If the voltage stays above 10 volts then there’s a problem with the HDS. Hopefully this is the case and the software upgrade will take care of it.
