HDS-5 Insight questions

I have a relative that is looking to upgrade. He is being recommended the HDS-5 with Insight package. Is this the in-land and coastal water packages? Is it Navionics data? If he was to buy a Lakemaster Insight Map for MN, how does one select which map data to display (default Insight versus Lakemaster Insight chip)?

Thx in adv, I may have more questions later…

You can switch between maps but can’t tell you the exact steps off hand. I have HDS 8 with insight, an HDS 7 without, navionics chip and lakemaster MN chip. The pre installed maps on the HDS units are the ‘fishing hotspot’ maps. I rarely use the pre-installed maps. In fact, to this date I only used it while playing with the unit in my garage.
In my opinion, if it is already known that an extra chip is going to be purchased, go with the base mapping rather than the insight mapping and then bump up to the HDS7. The pre-installed maps seem to only make sense if you were going to be fishing different states.

    Just my opinion

    So the:
    HDS 5 Lake Insight Map

This is the Hot Spot Maps in the 3-D (Insight) format, preloaded on the unit? This looks to be $50 more for this preloaded, than say the basemaps. ($799 versus $749, retail of course).

I would buy the HDS 5 base unit and buy a navionics chip for it.

I just bought a hds 10 and hds 7 and I went with the base units. I looked at the preloaded software on the insight. On my favorite lake there was no accuracy in the mapping. At least not compared to my navionics chip. To me, if there no accuracy there’s point in spending the extra money.

So if I were you, I would save the money and buy a base unit. And use the money you saved to buy a navionics or a lakemaster chip for your area.
