I just picked up the Lakemster Insight chip to run on my HDS-7. I’m just curious if you guys feel the extra $100 for this chip is worth it over the basic 2010 Lakemaster chip. I have not opened it yet and still debating which way to go.

    If I may:

I picked up the Elite-5 yesterday and so far I love it (tho I have yet to get it on the water, lol) for it’s GPS, nav and lake map integration with the Elite-5 itself.

Now, if I were running an HDS, I’d have to go for the Insight chip because it ties in with the best features of the HDS. Getting the regular Lakemaster with an HDS finder is kinda like putting a 4″ lift in your truck and then running standard P235 tires on it anyway.

At least that’s how it seems… if you’re gonna put the $ into the HDS units in the first place it just makes sense to put the $ into the Lakemaster that matches it’s functionality.

While I would normally agree with you, there are positive and negatives to the Insight chips.

(Pos) – Insight is $100 more than the standard Lakemaster chip, and with that $100 extra you get shaded relief mapping. I have read that the shaded relief goes away once you zoom in to a certain level. I am usually zoomed in a good amount so I wonder how useful this is, if it’s true? Anyone know how far you can zoom in with the relief shading?

Called in to Lakemaster: .2 mile

(Neg) – With the Insight chip you only get 770 lake maps, vs the 1100 you get the Lakemaster chip IMO.

From Lakemaster: This is mainly because they wanted to get the card out. Next year will have more lakes.

(Neg) – The standard Lakemaster has additional features not included on the Inight chip…as far as I am aware: Snowmobile trails, State Park Trails, MN State hiking Trails, and more Forestry Roads.

From Lakemaster: These are mainly not included on this 2009 Insight chip.

(Neg) – The current Insight chip is 2009 from what I have read. There may be a new chip being released soon?

From Lakemaster: Insight chip was released around Jan 2009, so it will not be updated for probably a year.
