Looking at the wiring diagram for a LSS1 shows
    Red- hot wire
    Black- Ground
    Blue – tape and ignore
Yellow- add a switch at console ?? are you guys adding a toggle or are you connecting to any on/off switch ???
I have a Alumacraft Tournament Sport so I have many switches at the dash that are all fused.
My question is what is this switch for and what does it do ?
Also how are many guys adding this switch ?
    Thanks for any help.

The switch is to turn the black box and transducer on and off, it servs the same purpose as the on/off switch on the head unit. Yes you need to install it,if you wire it hot the lss1 will be on all the time and run your battery dead.

    The yellow

wire is the Accessory Wake Up line. Connect the yellow wires together. When

the Accessory Wake Up line is used to connect units with the accessory wake

up feature, you can power up certain connected devices from one location,

including digital sonar optimizers and expansion ports.

Source See bottom of page 23.

Thanks so far for the info.
I am still trying to understand,
I see two options to wire these systems —
1st option is to connect the yellow wires from my two hds8 to each with the LSS-1 yellow wire and run these to a switch and then to 12v pos.
Second option is to connect the yellow wires from the HDS8 to each other and hook up a seperate yellow wire from the LSS1 to a switch and then to 12v pos ?
Thanks for being patient I dont want to wreck anything at these prices.

Refer back to the diagram in my link. They show all units
connected to a 12v power source.

The StructureScan doesn’t have an on/off switch so you need
to decide how to power it.
You have the choice to have it power up when you turn your
HDS8 on, by connecting the yellow wires together, or you can
connect the yellow wire to a switch to power the StructureScan.
If you decide to use a switch just cap and
tape the yellow wire on the HDS8’s pwr cable.

I’m unsure about connecting the other HDS8 yellow into the
loop. I guess if you had an HDS8 at the bow, and wanted the
StructureScan to power from that location as well, then you
would connect it with the other two yellow wires.

I have an HDS10 at the console and will wire my
StructureScan to a switched 12v source. I have an
HDS7 that will be used at either the bow or stern.
I have power and ethernet cables at both of these
locations. I plan on doing my “scanning” with the
HDS10 at the console and, via ethernet, I can share those
scans with the HDS7 at either location.

When I’m at the bow or stern I’ll be fishing so I’ll
more than likely be using a split screen with 2D sonar
    and GPS mapping.

    Hope this helps.

I just purchaed the same setup as you, 2-hds8’s with structure scan.

I am not using the yellow wires on the units as I am going to use the on/off button control the power.

However, you will need to use the yellow wire on the structure scan to a switch to turn that on/off or else if you just wire it up straight to the battery with red/black it will be on all the time and your battery will be dead the next time you take out your boat.

Now, that all said. With these new HDS units, with my exprience with them so far, IMO, I would not wire up the units to a switch or even that same switch to just power them off without using the on/off button on the units itself.

I do have a mater power swtich that I use at the end of the day after everything is powered off to make sure there isn’t any usage that will drain my battery overnight. Specifically in places where I cannot plug in the charger, I think it adds a little value.

You’ll always have to use the power button to turn an HDS
unit on. If you wire it to a switch (yellow wire) you’ll have to
open the switch to provide power to the unit and then the
    light/power button will be functional.

Just to throw my 2 cents worth in, I have just purchased the Sidescan unit to connect in with my HDS units. I read the instructions with the Sidescan unit last night after reading what was posted in this forum and see that Lowrance has recommended to connect the yellow wire to a separate switch to power the unit up. I am not sure why they recommend this as opposed to connecting the yellow wires from the head unit with the yellows from the sidescan. I currently have the LBS-1 Broadbander and NEP-1 Expansion port connected to my HDS head unit with all of the yellow wires connected together and everything powers up when I power up my head unit and everything powers down with the head unit. I would certainly recommend that everything be tied into a single accessories switch to make sure that everything is off when not being used. I disagree with the post that stated that if the yellow wire is not switched that the unit would be powered all of the time. The only way that could happen would be if the yellow and red wieres were tied together at the power source (battery). Without voltage present at the yellow wire, the unit would never turn on.
