All I can say is Wow. I hope it works as good as the demo. We will see. Look out HB you just lost some business.

The DownScan does look nice. That seems to be the biggest difference.

Pretty much was the end of 2D (for me anyway) when I got the 997. Never use 2D anymore!
I do like the down scan on the lowrance… I hope they put out a good product. Time will tell how many “new technology bugs” they will have to fix. Customer service sure could use to work out their bugs, though. I’m hoping competition serves to better each product. Has anyone heard how much the “add on” SS units will cost?
The ability to scroll down or “backtrack” back to images that have already left the screen and be able to mark waypoints on those images is pretty cool…

July 15, 2009 at 6:25 pm #790752Interesting. The down scan looks to me like that could be useful to positively ID things…rather than being “pretty sure” of what it is.
July 15, 2009 at 6:37 pm #790763To me, the images look a little clearer. Downscan looks great. Plus, you can share waypoints across the network in your boat. So I could mark a weedline from my console and follow it on my other display while running the trolling motor. Maybe that’s available on Humminbird; I don’t know. What I also want is to be able to share a map chip across a network. I’d bet this system/technology will be standard equipment on high end rigs in 5 years, just like color sonars are today.
Wonder when we’ll be able to buy this? My only hesitation in purchasing Lowrance over Humminbird is the recent negative customer service/reliability stories from Lowrance customers. Hopefully that will turn around.
July 15, 2009 at 7:16 pm #790780Best feature is being able to network transducers, that puts the Lowrance way ahead of the HBirds. All the Birds can do is interlink for Waypoints and GPS, which is a bit shortfall. I would not purchase Lowrance unit #1 as their HDS units are still getting the bugs worked out. Was not that impressed with some of the scans shown on their site either, I would have expeced better images to put on their website to show off. Should be neat to see one in action once they are out. Now you Lowrance guys will have some cool things to post and show us Birds.
July 15, 2009 at 7:30 pm #790784Downscan is way cool.
Looks like I will be waiting a year before pulling the side imaging trigger. Really want to see how the bugs work out.July 15, 2009 at 7:55 pm #790791Posted on another site.
Electronics Leader Unveils LSS-1 StructureScan Sonar-Imaging Module Option for HDS at ICAST 2009
Lowrance debuts World’s First Fish-& Structure-Imaging Sonar with Full Panoramic Viewing
Lowrance Electronics
Published July 15, 2009Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance, a world-leading brand in marine electronics, announced today the premier of its next-generation sonar technology, the LSS-1 StructureScan™ sonar imaging module for Lowrance High Definition Systems (HDS), at ICAST 2009 in Orlando, Florida. Raising the bar in fish-finding technology, the sonar-imaging module is the world’s first to offer anglers a new dimension in underwater picture-like displays – side-to-side plus straight down, full panoramic viewing.
The innovative Lowrance StructureScan features a combination of SideScan and an exclusive new DownScan Imaging™ technology. SideScan provides full-screen left and right side-viewing with extra-crisp detail of up to 480 ft. (146 m) of underwater coverage that displays structure and fish targets, as well as their imaging-scan shadows. The new DownScan Imaging feature allows anglers, for the first time, to see submerged detail directly beneath their boats, providing a complete underwater picture in a screen format that is easy to interpret. With revolutionary on-screen display versatility, anglers can merge Lowrance side and down sonar scans in split-screen to view wide-area surveys and highly-defined detail. As a unique new tool, anglers can also compare DownScan Imaging with 2D sonar images in split-screen display to better distinguish fish from structure. Removing all of the guesswork common to existing fish-finding technology, the new LSS-1 delivers the highest underwater definition ever achieved with crystal-clear views in shallow and deep, freshwater or saltwater – even at speeds up to 30 mph.
“The new StructureScan sonar-imaging module is another revolutionary step forward in sportfishing marine electronics from Lowrance,” said Louis Chemi, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Navico Americas. “Offering never-before-seen underwater detail, the sonar module is the first and only wide-coverage sonar solution that also delivers a total underwater panoramic picture – so anglers won’t miss a thing. Combine this new structure- and fish-finding tool with additional cutting-edge features available with Lowrance’s HDS displays, such as built-in, award-winning 2D Broadband Sounder™, Insight mapping, Navionics compatibility with Turboview™, award-winning Broadband Radar™ and SIRIUS weather solutions, and the results are truly amazing.”
The LSS-1 StructureScan sonar imaging module allows anglers to cursor anywhere on the screen to receive information on distance from the boat and target depth for an exciting new-level in precision bait or lure presentation. In addition, a new synchronized TrackBack™ function featuring simultaneous scroll-back in the recorded history of sonar or mapping windows, allows anglers to find spots and set waypoints for easy returns to desired fishing locations. Ensuring the ultimate in functionality, StructureScan sonar imaging can combine one or more views in a window to display HDS built-in Lowrance Lake Insight™, Nautic Insight™ or Insight USA™ cartography with Fishing Hot Spots® inland and coastal detail, as well as all Navionics Platinum, Platinum+ and other chart card offerings.
Based on Lowrance’s affordable, plug-and-play, onboard, high-speed Ethernet network, the LSS-1 StructureScan sonar imaging module is an optional add-on that easily networks with up to three onboard HDS displays to share SideScan, DownScan and 2D sonar imaging for boat-wide underwater surveillance, each with independent control. Enhancing safety and fun on the water, the LSS-1 can also network with the new BR24 Broadband Radar and LWX-1 SIRIUS satellite weather module via Ethernet. The fully-waterproof LSS-1 module comes with a rugged, low-profile, dual-frequency 455 kHz and 800 kHz panoramic imaging transducer that is easy to install, and offers multiple mounting locations, including a simple adapter option for a trolling-motor mount. The transducer also features a built-in temperature sensor and operates in tandem with any HDS 2D sonar transducer without cross-talk interference for display clarity. Like all Lowrance products, the LSS-1 StructureScan sonar imaging module is protected by a two-year limited warranty.
Price & Availability:
The new Lowrance LSS-1 StructureScan sonar imaging module, exclusive for HDS displays, has a suggested retail price of US $699.00, and will be available for purchase from authorized Lowrance dealers and distributors throughout the United States and Canada later this year. For more information on StructureScan, or to learn more about Lowrance and its entire product line, please visit http://www.lowrance.com.July 15, 2009 at 7:56 pm #790792I’ll be waiting about a year also. I’ll have the only Jon boat that I know of with a HDS10 with side and down imaging though.
July 16, 2009 at 12:04 am #790829Lowrance needs to emloy some US citizens to work their customer service it is terrible!!!I have several of their products and they are extremely short handed in customer service. If any of our members have their ear tell them customer service is not 2-3 hrs on hold.Repeat buyers come from good customer care.

Wade, When will this be available to ship??
Yep, As others have said we have been told “fall” of 2009.
stevewaynePosts: 2July 27, 2009 at 1:25 am #793242word I get is hds imaging module will be available sooner than november. that would be a first for lowrance to start selling a new product before (not long after) a stated date.
for other posts, with the new down scan tech, 2d sonar is prolly not dead and may have new life. used together, looks like down scan picture can show if targets are structure, and broadband 2d dsp sonar separates fish out as arches. that’s never been done before. potentially good for me, not good for fish.
Boater44Posts: 9September 29, 2009 at 7:50 pm #536150it should be avail 11-23 according to lowrance. you can preorder at some places online now.
