My maiden voyage was yesterday, and my new 27c unit would not read shallow water depths. The GPS readings at all times worked perfect.
I did a search here, and there was a discussion on needing a Beta Release Update to fix the shallow water readings.

What does this entail, and how is it down??
    thanks for helping out.

    Jack,
Go the the lowrance website and to their update page.
You can download the update directly to a SD card-so you will need a card reader and a chip, WalMart has both and inexpensive.
Pop the chip into your unit, turn it on and it automatically updates your unit.

Also, once you download the new version to your unit make sure you are in the “shallow water mode” made a big difference for me.

Unfortunatly, that has been a big problem with those particular units. You can run a search on many walleye websites and find thread after thread stating the same issue/fix. As I understand it, there are also many instances where the software update off the website does not fix the problem either. You will then need to send the entire unit back in to the Lowrance shop. I know one person mailing his off just this week having had the same problem – after several software update attempts. I told him last fall to do it over the winter, but he insisted that he wait until his fist long distance trip out of state – to ultimately find that I was right. ….No botton over his entire weeks vacation!
Good luck with it Jack. Hopefully yours will work with the simple software update.

I have had great success with other lowrance units but in my honest opinion the 27c is the biggest piece of ever constructed. This is just my experience with the unit. I’m sure there are good and bad ones of every brand and unit but I think this one takes the cake.

P.S. sorry about your problems with the unit Jack, maybe yours will be fine, we had to send ours in 2 times, this is our 3rd unit and so far so good. It’s really frustrating because they definately aren’t free.

thanks for the suggestions, I’ll find a card reader and chip soon and try and do the updates.
    Hope that does the trick.
