Just curious if anyone has owned or notices the differences between these two? Some of the advantages of one over the other?

I think the advantages are in the HDS-5. It has the built-in broadband sounder. It is compatible with new options that will be available later this year, such as the side imaging add-on and Navionics TurboView maps. It is compatible with the LGC-4000 GPS module (optional) if a guy wanted to have the fastest satellite updates on the unit. And, it comes with the 83/200 khz transducer so you have the ability to have a wider or narrower beam and you can switch frequencies to avoid interference with other units.

One other note, the HDS-5 has been reduced in price and Lowrance has a $50 rebate on the unit, making it much more affordable. You can get the full package for $565 after rebate.

    1. go with an external gps antenna so the 520 not 522. IF the antenna goes you can just remlace that rathere than the whole unit on the 522 internal.
    2. as of now HD units DO NOT accept navionics cards. Supposedly Lowrance is releasing the update on the 15th but that date was alreaddy changed from and earlier release. ??? not sure if there will be bugs with the unit.
thats just me, i would love to upgrade myself but im gunna stick with the 520 till the HD’s have some water time.
    just my thoughts…

Chucker makes some good points. I talked to Lowrance about the Navionics update issue and the engineers say it should be available May 15th. That is an issue for sure, but it is one that will be resolved soon. If you are one that does not use map chips or you use Lakemaster chips, it’s not an issue for you.

Also, the HDS-5 can accept an external antenna, so if the internal antenna goes bad you can always add an external antenna as well, same as the 520C. The bonus for the HDS-5 is that it has a TWO year warranty versus the one year warranty on the 520C. That extra year could be huge.
