I have a LCX 27c that I have just purchased and installed on my 97 Champion. I am having a problem acquiring signal on the GPS . The sonar portion of the unit is working fine. Can anyone give me an idea where to start looking to take care of this problem?? Thanks.

Do you have an antenna?? an external antenna that is? I do not believe that unit has an internal antenna, but I could be wrong

Make sure the puck has power also, Go to the GPS screen and look if it is picking up. If your inside right now that may be your problem, the puck needs stright sight to the sky.

Also make sure the external GPS is at least the proper distance away from the head of the unit. I had this same problem with a 37 once, I had to mount the external antenna on the opposite side of the boat as my gps/sonar unit and problem was solved, I think the manufacturer says at least 3 ft away, but it’s been a while since I had that unit.

Duke is corect, the LCX’s do not have an internal antenna.
It would require a red T along with a red connector and a terminator for 1 end if no other NEMA devises are hooked up.
The LCX head unit powers the external antenna so power to GPS puck isn’t necassary.

Lowrance did experience some problems with the 3000 series GPS puck and it that’s what you have, there’s a slight possibility that could be the problem.

If you don’t have an external antenna, make sure to get the 4000. It’s way above the 2000 or 3000.

It won’t get a signal inside of your garage. I don’t know why these are so sensitive and hand helds aren’t. My birds will lose signal going under a bridge.

I thought the puck was powered off the network. The puck gets continual power even if the head unit is off.

They didn’t have a slight problem, I would say it was much more widespread than that. I abandoned Lowrance for many reasons bad pucks being one of them. If I remember correctly the message I got on the three units with a bad pucks said “GPS module not responding”. If it says that 90% chance you get to buy a new puck. If you need a new puck you will need to update your software to run the newest puck.On a positive note the 4000 puck is much better and quicker than the older pucks. Call Lowrance and see if you can get a discounted price on a new one. Good luck

As far as I know, Jon is correct on the matter of powering the network.

    Not necessarily true.

    For instance:

    1) If your gps puck can’t find enough satellites inside your garage, you’ll get this same message. I see it all the time in my garage.

    2) If you don’t have power to the network, even though you’ve turned on the LCX-27c, you will also get this same message.

My lund has two of these units on it and I’ve seen this message numerous times while out on the water. A half hour later, its running just fine.

Basically, there will be times when your unit will not be able to access the satellites.

Maybe that’s why your not suppose to rely solely on these units for navigation!

And if I remember correctly, I think after I read the directions I also had to put a switch in to be able to shut off power to the external antenna. Been a while but if I remember correctly those external units do draw power if the unit is shut off.

    Your are correct sir!

That’s precisely how I know you will get the “GPS module not responding” message if you turn on the LCX-27 but not the power to the network.

Follow the setup instructions. Make sure the puck is farther than three feet away from the unit.

The network is powered off the power cord going to LCX head unit (un like the HDS models where you need a seperate power node).
Yes, if it’s not switched the GPS puck will always be drawing power but when switched you also can’t power the head unit itself… correct???

If the switch is only on the wires powering the network-this is what you want- the head will turn on with the switch in the off position. If the switch is on the main power wires from the battery, then the head wont turn on.

To achieve this, you’d need to install a power node in line on the netwrok?… correct?

If your unit has the original power cable with three separate cables labeled, no power node required. Connect the cable labeled for nema to the switch and power will be supplied to network when it is attached to head unit. You can use the power node if you want, but don’t need to. The Lowrance manual for your unit should show how to wire the network.
