I have a HDS7 Gen 2 with Structure Scan at the helm, and need to put a smaller unit at the bow and hook it into the transducer that’s on my Terrova.

–Do all new Lowrance units link together? I’m looking for a cheaper unit up front.
    –I can’t find a unit that doesn’t come with a transducer…Can I buy a unit w/o a transducer?
–I don’t care about seeing downscan on the bow unit, but do want to see GPS.

    –What do I need?????

Most of the new units will link together via ethernet or NMEA200 network. They used to sell units without the transducer so I would assume you can still get them that way. If you want to see GPS on the bow unit, you will need to be a unit that has GPS. You can’t just hook a locator to another unit with GPS and get GPS that way to my knowledge.

So all I really need to do is connect an ethernet cable from the console unit to the bow unit that will have GPS? Do I even need to connect the bow unit to the transducer on the Terrova?

You can go ethernet between two compatible units and share transducers. If you take an HDS and hook it to another HDS, with a transducer off both (skimmer in back, TM ducer in front), you can use either transducer.

The only GPS type information you can share between the two units would be the antenna (via NMEA network) and the waypoints/trails/tracks which when doing sharing will allow something you save on one unit to also save on the other.

You can’t share map chips or any other GPS information to my knowledge.

If you wanted to view the feed from the skimmer transducer on both the console and the bow units, you can do that and wouldn’t have to have a TM transducer. Of course, when you are looking at your screen in the bow, you would need to remember that what you are looking at is really 16 or 18 feet behind you.
