The last 2 times out the HDS8 stopped reading the bottom after about 5 hours of fishing. The first time I changed transducers and it worked fine. It did it again yesterday with another new transducer. The unit is only 3 months old. My question is it the transducer (if it is why 2 news ones doing the same thing) or is it the unit.

You should check your voltage read out on unit itself as the day progresses.
If you are losing volts as battery deadens, then that very well could be where the problem lies.
    Worth a check anyhow.
    Good luck

Voltage is fine that is the first thing that I checked. I run 2 units that are the same off of one deep cycle battery. If I shut the unit off for about 1/2 hour it will work great run I turn it back on.

Have you tried switching the transducer to the other unit on the dash?

What size weights did you want again?
