I bought one last year and used on the front of my baot at the trolling motor station in the front. Worked great for me and had no trouble seeing it in any light condition.

..Hey Thru. If you are going to use it MOST of the time on the big sip.? All you really have to know is the depth and speed. My 3 cents. From 50 plus yrs. on the big creek. OOPS sorry i am not the modern man. But i know what WORKS. ..,,..,.rrr

I agree with rrr if you are primarily fishing the river. If you have to study your electronics to figure out what’s going on or what you are fishing- you are probably a day behind the bite.

I would agree with the above two posts if I was a single species angler and in at least one case, can only figure out how to work the on/off switch.

Ok, that was a little harsh…sorry Randy.

Having the ability to find your way home at night is not only adventitious at times but the smart thing to do. When an unexpected fog rolls in and you’re inching along shore or what most did before gps came out…anchor and wait until morning.

There’s many on this site that have so much more fishing experience than I. In fact, I’m willing to bet there’s some that have forgotten more areas to fish than I’ve ever known. Which is why dropping a waypoint in some location will remind a person when they get to retirement age that there might be a good area to fish over this way or that way. (there I go again LOL!)

Up until this last fall I was one of the nay sayers on down imaging/Downscan/structurescan/side imaging. I went out over the last couple year with people that had them. Because of the settings that had to be adjusted just right, these people didn’t have much to say about these features. They spent the money for it, but it wasn’t helping them a bit. The just didn’t know how to run it.

I went out with a fella this fall, Chris Meyer. He was running all sorts of Lowrance gear. Radar included.

I was telling him about the above and I didn’t think the X-imaging was worth a hill of beans because of how finicky it was. He showed me what I was passing up by just not knowing using traditional sonar.

I’m not sure about other brands, but just by selecting the X-Imaging, the Lowrance auto adjusted the settings to give him the images that we see in all the posts on line. Zero adjusting including while speeding up or slowing down.

For my type of fishing, I like to know about the log laying in the middle of the river. Even if it just has those smaller fish they call walleyes hanging behind it, I like knowing about it. We all know big walleyes don’t like wood right?

I watched an angler stop just short of a pod of fish while vertical jigging for eye…the whole time we were out! That was a jaw dropper for me. So much so, I’ve already sold my old sonar/gps and I’m waiting for Gen-2 HDS-8 with StructureScan.

Like the internet and air conditioning, once you’ve used it, it’s going to be darn hard to get by without these fads.

FYI I wouldn’t even try to out fish RRR and his statement above is so very true if you’ve spent a half century on the water fishing daylight hours like he has. Just that there are some that fish other ways, don’t have the experience and fish for other species.

PS I can’t tell you squat about that Elite unit, never used one.

I should have added I have been a day behind the bite a few times! Gps speed is critical, and you are correct in saying gps is a definite aid with safety.

    “Adventitious??????”

I had to look that one up.

    Bing Dictionary:
2.unusually positioned: developing in an unusual position, as does a root growing downward from a branch

BK, do you mean that a Lowrance will keep us from running into a “root growing downward from a branch”???????

    Dan

P.S. Some good points in your post BK, but “adventitious” kind of baffled me!

I don’t know if a ‘bird could do that! Too funny!

When a person is tired…even spell check won’t do it at times. LOL!
