My buddy and I each purchased a new 334C in 2006 or so. About 6 months agao, his unit started to shut off everytime he’d fire his main engine up. I thought he just had some wiring or battery issue, but he never did try to trouble- shoot the problem. Well, about a month ago, mine started doing the same thing. Sporadic at first, but now shuts off everytime I fire up the main motor. Have to restart it, and works fine till the next time I fire up the motor. Checked battery connections and fuse, and both seem fine. any thoughts out there? (besides “should have bought a HB”)

334C Unit shuts down

Polish Beer cures all.
Sure sounds like a voltage drop. Does your unit read the running voltage?
I just had the same issue but my battery wouldn’t hold a charge for 6 hours. Just running the locater and Nav lights my voltage would drop to 10.9v. When starting the 90 horse, my HDS would shut off. Replaced the battery and no problem with the sonar/Gps.
November 9, 2011 at 1:44 pm #1007613Sure sounds like a voltage drop to me. If the unit is working fine otherwise then that would be my guess.
I run multipul units, 2 LGC 4000 Pucks, an expansion port and I would have the same problem. Not at 1st (shortly after re charged batteries), but as day went on.
Being I run so much, I decided to piggy back a second 12v just for starting and electronics. Not a single problem sice.
I don’t beleive you’d have to consider this drastic of fix. Check to see if your voltage is dropping when hitting ignition.
Good luckNovember 9, 2011 at 1:45 pm #1007614Already tried the Polish beer….drank a 12-pack but didn’t seem to help. maybe should have given the unit (the 334C, that is) a beer bath.
Will check the voltage as a next step.November 9, 2011 at 1:47 pm #10076151 other thing you can try. Completely charge your battery and then fire motor. If it doesn’t kick out then it’s definetely a voltage drop. An old, or getting old baterry can do this.
November 9, 2011 at 2:25 pm #1007624Don’t throw it under the bus yet, the common problem is the unit shuts off when it starts, even my brand new HDS and my Humminbirds did that when I had a low battery charge, units are designed to run at a certain voltage . What supplies the power? The battery….like they said look for a voltage drop situation bad connections, battery going bad, bad fuse connections..etc…..

I believe the replies are right on. Many outboards require a very high number of CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). For example my Optimax requires 1000 CCA. If yiu decide to purchase a new battery, please check your Owners Manual for starting battery requirements and be sure to meet or exceed them.
November 9, 2011 at 2:58 pm #1007635to add to my previous post, you can also wire the 334 directly to the battery + and – and then start your engine, if it doesn’t shut off look at a wiring issue, if it does look at a battery issue.
