First off, I have to say this feature is awesome for the guy that’s on the water a lot.

It takes the guess work out of the weather while your fishing. Tracking the direction of storm or even rain. Adjustable lightning and storm alarms that will sound on your ‘Bird or Lowrance unit.

One time there were two storms that I was alerted to and by watching them on the HDS-8, I could see that both were going around me. I would have otherwise headed in.

So, last week I call Sirrus to turn this service off for the winter months. I was told 5 months is all they could turn it off for and it would restart automatically. I couldn’t extend that 5 month period.

That would have restarted my service in the middle of Feb!

“Nope, sorry…that’s what our Terms of Service Agreement states” she said.

Well today I finally had the time to read the dang thing.

Then I called the phone number that I received in an email reiterating the fact that it was suspended for “5 months only”.

I had them read the agreement to me.

    Quote:

    13. Service Suspension: This subsection applies only to the “XM WX Service” offered by us which provides comprehensive graphical weather displays in your vehicle, boat, plane, or any fixed location in the continental U.S. and 100+ miles into U.S. coastal waters. Subscribers of fee-bearing XM WX subscriptions may request an XM WX “End of Season” subscription package for one time in any twelve month period, for a duration of up to seven months. An “End of Season” subscription is a “suspension” of service which can be requested for up to seven months. We reserve the right to terminate any End of Season subscription remaining active for longer than 7 months at any time thereafter and without prior notification, whereupon a Cancellation Fee shall be assessed against any remaining service credits on the subscriber’s account

    Boy did she sound surprised!

If they are telling you anything less than 7 months, just have them read paragraph #13 from the Aug 1st 2011 Terms of Service Agreement.

Don’t forget to call the Marine and Aviation phone number…

    866-635-7726.

They know the difference between a radio and a sonar/gps unit. <sigh>

I was told a little different story in that I would have to
call them after 5 months and ask to keep my account on hold for another month. They would start it up again in April without the call for the additonal month on hold.

Thanks for sharing that tidbit Brian!!

I agree on the alarms. It has saved me numerous times from
    getting hammered.

I called and suspended mine today and was also told I would have to call in 5 months to get it suspended longer.

    Great work Brian!
I wonder how many people were incorrectly informed.

That’s what I was told last year by calling the regular CS line.

I called the Marine and Aviation Dept. this year they said “no, 5 months and no longer”.

Guess it depends on who you’re talking with. Either way, it’s 7 months for Bird or Lowrance…btw.

Maybe a stupid question… But why are you guys suspending service? Why not just leave it active and not use it?

Over the 7 months the savings would be about $90.

Although there are times when I think I would be time ahead by just paying the $90.

    $25.00 a month X 6……………………

I don’t use my boat in the winter so it would be a waste
    to not suspend the service.

    FYI

The difference in price between Dan and I is he has the radio service as well. I’m only running the In-Land Weather.

    11/04/11 Update:

So I was a bit peeved about how much time I’ve spend on the phone trying to get everything straightened out since I first subscribed with Sirius. I did a little searching on the net and found the CEO’s name and some email addresses for Sirius. Plugged in the CEO’s name in the same format and sent off a polite nastygram.

The next day I received a call from the head of the Marine/Aviation Division. Apologizing and making sure all was well. I explained again, that the letter send wasn’t about me…it was about ALL of their In-Land customers. (See replies above.)

Today 11/4, I received a call from the Vice President of the same group. In his voice mail he apologized, thanked and explained how they were fixing the issue.

It’s going to be interesting to hear if anyone else has an issue going forward. I would hope not.
