I was up fishing this weekend and my 522c would not show the bottom. It would give a depth sometimes, but mostly just said 1-2 feet. It wouldn’t work at all over 30 feet. And then sometimes it would work pretty good in 10-25 feet. A buddy I was with has a 520c, so I tried that, and it worked just fine. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could be.

I’ve been through 4 transducers with my 334C. It’ll work again for a while after replacing the ducer though. I get the same thing, my display will always show 1-2′.
Try to hook it up to your buddies 520 and see if it works.

But why would his 520 work with my trasducer then?
Bad transducer.
June 21, 2011 at 5:17 pm #974871If the transducer is bad you would think it would be bad for both units, not just the 522c. However, you indicated that it had worked intermittently on your 522c so it could be that you just got lucky and it was working well on the 520c. Hard to say for sure.
You could have a problem with the unit itself. I would call 1-800-628-4487 and ask to speak to a technician about it. It may be that a hard reset would even take care of the problem. The reset procedures are listed here:

June 21, 2011 at 11:48 pm #975056If it works all the time on the 520 and sometime on the 522 it might be the transducer connector on the transducer cable or more probable the transducer connector on the 522. Also, might check menu, sonar features, fishing mode and that you are set to fresh water. Good luck

If you have done the latest software update there is also a shallow water setting accessed the same way as the above directions that eliminates alot of the issues like it sounds like you are having.July 30, 2011 at 2:32 pm #985126I agree with the previous posters, if your transducer worked fine when you first installed it and now your seeing erratic returns, the transducer is going bad. What usually happens is the transducer’s crystal loses its mechanical constraints inside the case and starts giving erratic results. Sometimes it will seem to work fine, but the solution is to replace the transducer.
Different head units can give varying results, especially if there is a difference in output power watts. I had a transducer that worked perfectly fine with a Lowrance LMS-334 (2400 watts), but wouldn’t work consistently with a higher powered LCX-110 (8000 watts).
