It’s a pretty good size update. What size SD card you using? Heard a few had problems with 1GB or less. Mine worked just fine with a 2GB
Good luck, it’s well worth it!!!

When you look at the card, how many files are on it and what is the file extension? If the file is HDS_4.0.exe, then you didn’t run the extract process and extract the update file. Save the update from the Lowrance site on your computer. Go to the file you saved (previously mentioned EXE file) and run it. You will then be able to extract the update to your SD card.

The instructions on the Lowrance website are not very good, and many people often end up copying an EXE file to their SD card, instead of the upd file that is needed.

I use a 512mb card for my updates and it works just fine.

Download and save the update to your COMPUTER first. Its a large file and will take some time even with fast Internet connection.

After its done downloading, right click OPEN and RUN the update file. It will ask you where to install it. Specify your SD card location and install the update to the card.

Load the card in your HDS with the power off. Then power it up and it will automatically install the update. This will take a few minutes…

I don’t think the older units will work with a card over 2gb. I’m not sure if they will work with an SDHC either.

my card is a 512….I gotta try something. I opened the file already and just have to go plug it in the unit and see if it’ll recognize the file…I hope it does….

Well after attempting to do this 2 more times and using a different computer and buying another sd card and attempting to do this I finally gave in and broke down and went to Thorne Bros and they installed it for me. Let me say this Lowrance customer service is very poor and I am quite disappointed. The problem I am having is that it is loaded to a temporary file and we can not find that file after it is done running no history anywhere in the computers that we attempted to do this with. The only way I was able to get it to download was rather than hit run was to hit save and put it on the sd card but then you cant get it to load into your hds unit. Cant the brainiacs at lowrance make it so we can just dowload to an sd card directly and then pop it in our unit rather than having to go through the current hassle. I mean I am not totally computer illiterate working with CNC programs and file servers.I did the 3,0 and 3.5 with no problems.

Sounds like user error to me! Don’t be a hater on Lowrance just because you cannot follow the directions.

Me and 99% of other Lowrance users installed it fine without any issues. Mine installed directly to the SD card, then put it in the unit and bingo bango! Done…

Personally, I figure if they can have a gps ect in a unit, it should be able to make software updates on it’s own.

Pull up next to a wifi…press an access code on the sonar and presto, it’s done….

However until that day, we’ll always have a few that struggle. Some because the don’t know what an SD card is, some because of..well who knows.

    perhhead,

it sounds like there is a firewall of some sort (on your computer) that is not allowing you to run the file. You need to download (save) the file somewhere you can find it, other than the SD card. Once that is done, you should run the executable (file) that you just downloaded. During that process, you will be able to select the SD card for the destination of the files. After that, put SD card in Lowrance unit and power up.

The process doesn’t have to be that complicated, but part of it is probably your computer setup that is making the process more lengthy.

The browser you use and the preferences you have setup in the browser can make the process a lot more complicated than it needs to be.

This was attepted on 2 different computers from 2 different locations one by me and one by my brother in law who used to work for best buy and is a techno geek. I talked to someone at lowrance and followed his instructions explicitly and he also informed me who cares if you are able to download it there is going to be patch for this update coming soon anyhow.
