Last fall I noticed my dad’s HDS 9T updates heading really slow compared to my humminbird 1199. He’s got the older LGC4000 GPS puck, would upgrading to the point 1 puck help keep his tracking faster/more accurate (speaking at slow speeds <2mph)? I’ve got the puck with heading sensor in my bird and it keeps me pointing where I actually am considerably faster which comes in handy when your trying to work tight structure out in the middle of open water.

Have you checked the refresh rate on the HDS? It may be in your settings.
February 16, 2018 at 8:46 am #1752826I did not, knowing dad I’m sure it’s at whatever is default in the unit. Will have to take a look.
February 16, 2018 at 9:05 am #1752831The HDS 9 Gen 2, 3 and Carbons all refresh at 10Hz.
Adding a point 1 won’t change the refresh rate as it also refreshes at 10Hz. The point 1 is also just a heading sensor, so it always shows the boats heading compared to structure.

I’m thinking this must be why mine seems some much more accurate as I’ve got the heading sensor humminbird puck. That was the toughest part when I noticed it fishing with him last fall (compared to mine), by the time it showed me pointing where I wanted I had already turned too far and was constantly having to correct back. Looked like a drunken sailor out there.

Can you clarify, what direction orientation is he using for the chart? Is he using heading up, north up, course up? Don’t know?
Are you talking about the chart twisting when you are changing directions or are you saying the little arrow which should be your position itself is not recognizing changes in directions as you move?
It sounds to me like you are talking about the orientation of the chart, but I wanted to make sure.
Some guys prefer to use “North up” which keeps North at the top of the screen at all times. Some, like me prefer to use course or heading up which means the direction I am moving in is at the top at all times, this also means there is an arrow indicator pointing toward where North truly is in respect to the chart.
Just wanted to clarify which lag you are talking about.February 16, 2018 at 12:42 pm #1752909<div class=”d4p-bbt-quote-title”>Chris Messerschmidt wrote:</div>

You’re correct.
February 16, 2018 at 1:47 pm #1752926Capt. – north up, I tried heading up once and couldn’t stand the map moving around. With my ‘bird im used to using the arrow (can’t for the life of me recall what it’s called) to plot out where I’m headed and adjust and it’s pretty accurate and ‘current’ (but I have a heading sensor puck). I found that same ‘arrow function on his lowrance but by the time it caught up to pointing where I wanted it I had already turned too far and would then have to correct back. we were on mid lake structure too so I didn’t have any landmark to use close enough to do me any good anyway.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22831February 16, 2018 at 1:59 pm #1752928North up vs course up, I have had this debate with others over the years. The map still rotates with North up because you aren’t always heading North.
I guess I mainly use a bow mount trolling motor so I am always going forward, I could see if you are using a kicker/tiller and hovering more that it wouldn’t get so twisty.
When I am cruising from spot to spot, navigating around nasty areas IDK how anyone could use North up in those cases. I would run aground. LOLFebruary 20, 2018 at 9:44 am #1753739The Point1 pretty much eliminates the constant rotation of your screen at slow speeds when using the heading/course up map layout. The built in compass keeps a consistent reading and keeps your heading fixed and the icon pointed the direction your boat is pointed.
The constantly moving screen drives me nuts, so the Point1 is worth every penny if you’re a “heading up” guy like me and you do a lot of slow speed jigging/rigging.
Waxy

Sounds like I need one too! I have been debating upgrading at least one of my 3 GPS units in my boat. I should get the Point 1 at the same time then.
