I use my HDS-5 for ice fishing. I purchased the Lowrance ice pack that came with everything I needed to make it work for the ice. You will need to play around with the settings some to get it how you prefer. I actually prefer this type of screen and able to see the history so to speak of the action over my Marcum.

Used to use my hummingbird 595 on the ice. Bought a vex fl20. I originally built a box around a lawn mower battery. Just built a new box this year so I could have 2 units when fishing with my boys. Built this around a smaller 12 volt flasher battery. Much lighter and my 12 year old helped me. Only took about half an hour.

I do like to use my HDS on the ice and like what someone else said about being able to see the history. The bad part is that the normal vex battery is only good for a few hours of fishing. So I built a box and stand for a regular size battery, only problem now is the weight. Since the smaller batteries only give you a few hours of fishing I would skip the Lowrance Ice Pack and just order the parts you need and build your own box around a bigger battery. I put a ram ball on mine and move it from the boat to the ice fishing box. It also makes it sit up higher so your not staring at the ice.

if you can keep your screen back light down it will save a lot of battery.
I usually get 8 hours out of mine in the summer.

the mode I switch to is black for that reason. I always figured if I could turn off the GPS it might help. I normally don’t need GPS.

Plan to use my HDS 5 on a Marcum lithium shuttle. Should last all day with adjusted manual settings. Map won’t be used unless I need it, so that will help a lot. GPS is a battery killer.
