I use a lot of top water walk the dog, chug baits during the summer; mono always works better for me. Floro sinks causing the bait to loose action and the lack of strech in braid doesn’t always give the desired action either, not to mentioned missed fish due to how quickly the bait is removed from the strike zone on hook set.
I always have to tell myself, don’t set the hook on the strike. Wait until you actually feel the fish or see your line going sideways in the water. And yes, chug bugs do work for bass. It is a staple in the bwca tackle box and here on mille lacs.
That’s a classic bait that will never go out of style. I agree on no floro for surface baits – it kills the action. Braid vs mono could be argued like it has been with walleyes…. Ultimately its the rod action combined with the line. I love 20# braid on my 9 foot rods and 12# mono on my 7′ mediums. As mentioned aboved, you have to wait until you see the bait is gone from the surface to set up on them. I don’t think there is much more fun than seeing a smallie blow up completely breeched and hit it as its going back down.
