LOTW – Should I consider a night bite?

Headed up to Arnesen’s in Feb with a group. The plan is to get cabins and day shacks. Should I be considering a sleeper house at all, even if it is only for one night maybe?

Really looking forward to this trip. It’s been 20 years since I’ve been up there.

They are few and far between at night. But it makes for some of the best boozing time you’ve ever had

The best night bite in my experience has happened when I was set up shallow (15′-18′), but I’ve caught plenty in deeper water too.

They’ll usually come in suspended waytogo Actively jig them with glowing rattle baits (like a Salmo Zipper or Clam Psycho Shad)

That said, 95% of the best fishing is generally during the day.

The wife and I did a trip up there a few years ago, went thru Zippel Bay, did the shallow water sleeper with a deep water day house. The bite in the shallow sleeper was like clockwork. Good bite start about an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunrise, then not even a mark. Same in the afternoon, good bite about an hour before dark to an hour (at most) after dark.

That said our biggest walleye of the 2 day trip came at 4AM on a rattle reel (18in walleye)

We’ve done sleepers for many years, out deep. All we catch after dark is eelpout. These days we cover the holes after the night bite, play cards, music, drinking games, etc. We have caught walleyes after dark in shallow (in portables), few and far between.

The biggest benefit of a sleeper is you’re not on the resort’s clock (if getting bombed out), you don’t have to drive, you wake up and start fishing, fish until however late you’d like.

The personal freedom of a sleeper is the way to go. IMO

i experienced a banker bite. like 9-5. only hear of a fish here or there at night.
We drove the truck to the shack and back. Was really nice driving your own vehicle out.

Been to LOTW a number of times. Caught a few eelpout after dark and I believe only 2 walleye over 4 trips. Twice we had eelpout take out the majority of our lines. Not worth leaving lines in over night just to wake up to a tangled mess at 3AM. There is a pretty good night bite in the Igloo Bar at Zipple Bay however.

That’s a lot of the reason I prefer to fish Red over LOTW. We’ve caught more fish in the evening and through the night on rattles than we have caught during the day. That’s in permanents or Ice Castles. someone is usually getting up once a hour or so to a rattle reel a lot of nights.

I like to booze but I like to do it with a line in the water with a chance of catching something. Add the extra hour or so it takes to get there past Red lake and the longer drive out on the ice and i will take Red 9 out of 10 times.

You guys talk like there are rules against boozing in the daytime yay

Is a bit of a short trip, only in shacks 2 days so I think I’ll play by the preset plan. If it were a on a pond with a night bite maybe I’d push harder for that. The good quarter poker game will be in the cabin anyway.

First and only trip to LOTW in mid March last year picked up this 27″ fatty at midnight on a rattle wheel so it can happen. Sleeper to me is the only way to go as our bite went a hour past sundown. This year we will bring the auger and portable and head to deep water during the day.

Personally I would skip the sleeper and just stick to hanging out at the lodge. Not much of a night bite on the big mud puddle anyway.

Depends on what your looking for. Don’t get a sleeper with the intention of catching fish after dark. I enjoyed sleeping in a little compared to most places and driving out after breakfast.

Since I’ve never been to Arneson‘s before, would it be possible to do their day shacks Then take a truck out to shallower water in the evening/night?

I know the day Shacks we are going to don’t have roads but I’d imagine there are roads leading out from there to shallow areas closer in that we could bring our Clams out to.

Arnensons does not plow any roads out from their place, tracked vehicles only.
Dales fishhouse rentals right next to arnensons does have a plowed road but if there is a wind over 20mph they usually close it cause of the blowing and drifting.

We fish out of Dales and Arneson’s every weekend. About the only place you can go with a truck is east of the resort toward twin islands, there is a good shallow water spot around halfway to the islands. That is the only plowed road that I know of and it comes out of Dales, not Arenson’s. Almost always one or two houses up shallow there.
