WOW the forecast shows at least 2 weeks of good weather for fishing might be keeping the boat out a little longer this year. usually put the boat away third week in October roughly. With this weather do you find morning or later in the day the best for fishing for me lately the mornings have not been as productive. Let’s go catch some bass. I bet when the weather changes it will be quick.

It needs to cool off and get that water below 60. Then we will have good fishing. Right now is not what I consider a great time. We are stuck in the between

X2 still stuck in more of a summer pattern than a fall one IMO

I still don’t understand why anyone ever puts their boat away…..there is always fishable water if you can deal with a little cold. And, open water > hard water.

I put mine “away” as in change oil, clean everything out, top off and stabilize fuel, wipe down all interior compartments and reorganize. It’s still in my garage ready whenever I’d want to pull the trigger year-round. I think a lot of people who store their boats for Winter completely are the weekend recreators. Many also have kids in school and activities that leave minimal spare time (and daylight) during the school year.

With all that said, there are more and more people following your advice. I used to have the river to myself in the Fall and sometimes even in the early Spring. That’s not the case anymore. With Winters having substantially more “thaws” than ever before, people have caught on to the extended or never ending open water.

I agree. I haven’t hit any fall pattern YET. Hopefully after next weeks cool down. This hot bright sun is not helping

I agree….alot more people out. I’ve found that if it dips below 30 people stay away. Those are the best days imho.

Water near me was 65 degrees today I believe the cooler nights are slowly cooling down but your right it does need to get lower. As Buckybadger said I do the same thing. Except take my wheel bearing part to check them. For me the river is about 2 hours away and with an SUV I don’t think it would go to well pulling the boat out. As usual I’m ready to be out at any time usually the first nut out on the water around me with ice on yet whistling I have went to the river about 1 or 2 times a winter depending on the temp.

Hot days in the Fall feel good, but do not help the fishing much in my opinion. Heading to SoDak this weekend. We had some of best smallie and walleye fishing years ago when the water temp was 48-50. It’s about 65 right now. Lots of good days left.

We all like the idea of fall and many have memories of fall trips that have been crazy good. Fish tend to like stability and this is not a stable time of year, not saying put the boat away I won’t do that ’till Thanksgiving, what I’ll do is try summer stuff and fall, mix it up, know that the fish don’t read the magazines and just be glad to be out.

This time of the year I dont think they look for stability, I think they like the constant drop in temp. Fall is not typically a stable time. It’s all over the board and that’s when they start to fire up. Once that water temp starts dropping those fish put on the feed bag. They don’t read the magazines, so I go read to them

Hopefully we start to see a constant, slow drop in temperatures starting soon. It looks pretty warm today still but starting tomorrow I can see that slow drop coming and continuing next week. Plus we’re still in a major drought so rain would be very beneficial.

Water temp in Alex area is 63-66, and this Indian summer isn’t helping. Fishing will pick up with volatility with the weather. Accuweather said yesterday that next week would be low 60s as highs, check this morning, and back to low 70s as highs. Frustrating, I will fish once or twice a week until the temps start behaving. This is a grey area where fish are thrown off by stable temps. Been very slow for me.

I love Fall fishing. That said I have no problem with a extended summer. The longer we have before winter gets here the better. I use to love winter and ice fishing. These days I would be fine with a month or two of both. Once true fall water temps arrive I find fishing the afternoons and evenings are better than morning. I think the bite picks up a little once the sun has some time to slightly warm the water. Often the evening bite is rather short. By the time the water temps get good this year we will probably only be able to fish till 6:30-7:00.

So true Fishthumper It’s almost like waiting for ice wish it would cool down the night temps look to be in 40’s that should help some.

Brutal day for me today. Tried a new lake that had a great survey from 2019. Only 150 acres too. Lots of wealthy homes on the lake and it sure looked like they sprayed the crap out of the lake. There were NO weeds. Literally from 2 ft to 15 ft there was about a foot of weed cover on the bottom and that was it. Very odd. Caught two dinks on a ned and then packed up and headed to one of my favorite lakes and only managed a 2.5 lber from under a dock. That poor lake has been completely crushed. Used to be numerous 4 and 5 lbers and now you’re lucky to catch a few bass. Sad.

If the lake is truely the public domain people who happen to live next to the lake should not be able to kill habitat by spraying weeds. What if you live next to a park can you and your neighbors ask that certain plants be killed in the park? Why do people who live next to a lake feel that they own the lake? We put up with that idea.

I agree completely, but it’s happening annually all over MN. Lake association’s poison and rake out the weeds in the name of “cleaner water” so they can swim without touching icky weeds.

killed the Smallies on Rainy Lake last weekend.
60 degree water 60-65 overcast and 75-80 beautiful sun and glass lake = seemed to make no difference.
Mornings, afternoons and evenings were all good. Threw a choppo 105 and the smaller version in gray ( from the boat) threw to the rock edges and pulled out deep and threw a 5″ stick bait bass colored with an 11′ depth and crushed them.
At nite from the dock down the shore in front of the weedbeds was great too.
Never had so many smallmouths interested in me.

Fall bite has definitely started around Alexandria. Still have water temps in the mid 60s but we are smashing the walleyes and Smallmouth on fall patterns… for the past couple weeks.

We average well over 100 smallmouth a day. With half dozen going over 6lbs. Water temps are fine for me.

Had a great morning got up thought the forecast said rain. None so I hurried to the lake around 9 am got over 20 bass just crushed the crankbaits. Nice sizes right on weed edge from 10-12 FOW. Tried shallower with spinnerbaits and jigs just got some small ones so moved out deeper. The rain has made the lake darker. Went out tonight for just an hour before dark got zero water temp 67.

What crank baits do you prefer and what color? Crank baits have never been my thing in the bass realm.

I went this morning in the drizzle and did OK. Caught 11 in about 3 hours primarily on a black spinnerbait. The water temp has actually gone from a week ago. It was 68 last week and it was 69 this morning.

Gimrus, Cranks that don’t break HAA HAA Just kidding I swallowed some pride and bought a few Rapala DT 4,6,10 The 4 just crushed them. I like plastic or heavy enough cranks I can bait cast with. Then I really like rattle trap baits I prefer the original Rapala rattlin rap. Not as much luck on the Bill Lewis.

I absolutely crushed the fish today! Went to a lake with a north landing only fish it in the fall. Mostly a pike lake with some eyes not much bas, figured I would chase the pike not much weed cover found them in 2-4 FOW they would not commit to a spinner bait only got 2 on them then went to Rattlin Rapalas fire tiger and chrome blue sadly 2 bite offs really makes me sad but it happens. Got 4 walleyes 23-25 inchers 8 bass and 10 pike biggest 37 inches. The rattling Raps are so multi species and for me I get more accidental eyes on these rattling raps than anything.

I too am not a huge crank guy but when the fish tell that’s what they want that’s what they get.

Gimrus Forgot for colors fire tiger, chrome blue with orange belly if possible and chrome with green or gold back has worked the best for me in Rattlin raps.

For Bass cranks something with yellow in it or a pearl white of some sort

Still killing them on 105 Choppo ( white and grey too) throwing to shore and pulling back out over the weeds and between the docks. Getting a few out over weeds in 6-8 FOW too but not as many.
