Each winter I feed deer in my back yard ( Oh I mean LOTs of Squirrels ) I normally get a good supply of corn from my Buddy who farms. This year he had all his corn harvested by a custom harvester. So all his corn went direct to marked from the field. I am hoping to find a local farmer in the St. Cloud area willing to sell me corn direct. Probably like 10-15 Bushels. Willing to pay fair market value. Otherwise I will have to buy by the bag from Hein milling here in Sauk Rapids. I would prefer to get a larger supply all at one time and give a local farmer the $. Willing to pick up and load it myself. If anyone knows a farmer in this area, Please let me know

Go to the mill and buy your corn, you’re not doing the farmer any favors by buying it directly from them and most are busy enough that they are just going to view you as a pain in the butt for asking. Nothing more annoying growing up on a farm than when a city slicker came out looking for “ just a little corn or dirt or manure” and then act like you’re doing them a favor by taking it. Case in point your buddy could have saved you 15 bushels in a wagon and didn’t.

October 20, 2024 at 11:15 am #2294886Just go to a grain elevator. But before you do call them and make sure they can load into whatever you’ve got to haul it. If you’re putting it in drums or trash cans make sure they can hit that with their chute. Some grain elevators have no problem with this and others don’t want guys trying to get stove or deer corn because it’s a big pain in the butt.

He’s done just that every year. This years his went directly into a semi trailer and direct to the elevator. I just thought as long as I was willing to pay a farmer more than his current market price and save me a few $’s as well – Great. I do realize a small amount would not make much if any difference to them. I bet if I showed up and offered to buy their whole harvest at a increased amount they would more than jump on it.

October 22, 2024 at 9:32 am #2295257Being in the grain industry, this is a pain honestly.
The best thing would be to talk to the people in the scale/probe shack and have them save the samples for you and put them in a a big trash can that you can then just put in your pick up. I laugh at the bagged stuff in stores. 50 lbs for $12. A bushel of corn is 56 pounds and currently getting sold for 3.75I guess if an elevator in the area has a ground pile that would be easiest. And just scoop it yourself

The mechanic learned that he had hogs and wanted to trade a pig for the axle work. Dad told him, “sure I deliver them in loads of 175 where do you want them?”
The hassle just wasn’t worth it.

October 24, 2024 at 10:54 am #2295697Yes it’s nice to see the Whitetail in the yard in the fall.
I actually have them coming in my yard throughout the year.
One mama with two little ones as well as another mama with a single and when I’m in the backyard with the dog the little ones actually walk up curious if our dog is a new playmate. They are so used to us being in the backyard it doesn’t bother them. We have seen various bucks somewhat substantial racks.
Just be careful not to give them that “candy” corn too late into the season as once they start switching over their diet it can be harmful cause bloat and rumen acidosis which can be deadly.
October 24, 2024 at 1:40 pm #2295729Well I just stopped over to Heim’s on my lunch break and picked up 5 50 Lb. bags. Paid 8.00 a bag. Not sure how long 5 days will last. The deer may have to be put on a ration diet this year. Hopefully its a mild winter and they don’t even need it. Just fun to keep them around and watch them on my trail camera.

One is a good friend so he will do it for us. Perks of having friends that. Also get my Beef from them also.
