In about 2 weeks we are headed to leech lake for our annual fall perch/walleye fishing trip. The last few years the fishing on Leechhas been a little tough. Thinking of possibly taking one day and heading over to Winnie and giving it a try. Have not fished Winnie much and don’t have an idea of where to start. Mostly would like to target some jumbo perch but a few walleyes would be nice as well. Not looking for hotspots or waypoints, but just some general info. What depth and areas is the best place to start? With the warmer than usual temps I’m thinking the perch bite is a little behind but have heard that the bite has started. Thanks for any and all info.

No first hand info info but a kid I work with has grandparents that have a place at denny’s. He said last weekend they did really good pulling cranks over the tops of weeds in 8-12 feet. Said it was impossible to fish a jig in those weeds but the cranks worked awesome.
September 22, 2024 at 5:06 pm #2290386A few years ago we did really well over the weeds with cranks and spinners like mentioned above. That bite ends as the water cools and weeds die but with the warm temps I’ll bet it goes for awhile.
You can also scare up some big pike in those weeds if that’s something that interests you.

Will be lots of boats towards little stoney. Ill be up there this weekend and possibly the next.
September 23, 2024 at 9:49 am #2290468We did really well August 17-24 over on the West side of the lake between Mallard and Ravens. Hammered gold spinner, 3/16 oz weight and half crawler. 9-11 FOW. Caught a surprising number of jumbo perch along with our walleyes.

You mainly chasing eyes or perch. Please give a update how you do if you go up there this next weekendorve4Posts: 507September 23, 2024 at 3:18 pm #2290556Me and My dad Mainly chase walleyes and use shiners but my son who is 8 uses fat heads and targets perch. They both bite on either so It dont matter. Often they are mixed together. Last the perch were about a foot or two shallower closer to the weeds.
September 26, 2024 at 11:07 am #2290870Thumper I was up there on the 14th and 15th and did ok, my neighbor was up last weekend and only fished for a day and didn’t do so great. I will likely be up again this weekend or next weekend and as much as I can thru the end of October and it should only get better. 2 weeks ago I was in 8 – 14 feet and was mostly using crawlers on a spinner or trolling raps and that will transition more to a jig and minnow bite as the temps drop. PM me if your looking for a bit more info.
LabDaddy1Posts: 2440September 26, 2024 at 12:13 pm #2290871Not sure on perch specifically, but on literally any lake, I’d put a majority of my efforts into trolling weed edges with some kind of crank. Husky jerks, original floaters, x-raps, and/or berkley hit sticks on the shallow side and up over top. Flicker Shads or shad raps sizes 5-7 on the deeper edge in that 8-14 fow. Especially during low light and through the night. If u find a good spot or school of fish then do whatever, throw jigs/bait/bobbers if you want.
That’s just me. Seems a pretty universal technique that produces consistently.
Edit: doesn’t have to be weed related but it helps. Sand flats, rock bars out to that depth are good to troll too obviously. Cover ground. I’m just talking about walleyes tho
