I got a fish tank from my mother in-law and I would like to do a MN theme. I used to go into ace hardware on nicollet in south mpls and they had a tank w 2 small muskie in it.
I was thinking it would be cool to try and get my hands on a few small walleye and maybe a small pike to put in mine.
anyone have an idea where I could purchase a few fingerlings of MN fish species.

I believe you can purchase them from a private stocking company. But make sure to keep the receipt, I do believe you cannot legally keep game fish as a pet, someone correct me if I am wrong.

I was thinking that could be an issue as well.

They normally have a small selection of native fish, walleye, sunfish, perch, bass both large and smallmouth, crappies.

Prepare yourself for how much they will eat and how fast they will grow. I did they native tank once..

Unless you’re under 16 years old.

I did this in my backyard pond, approx 500 gallons. I put in a couple of channel cats and some largemouth bass. The bass ate me out of house and home. I don’t recommend doing this with a predatory fish. The channel cats stayed and grew big on an occasional hot dog.

You can’t fish for musky if you have one in your tank. 6 small walleye and you are at your limit for fishing those too.

Unless you don’t count them against your possession limit.

Thanks for the tip on aquatropics. A wet pet in Apple vally used to carry mn game fish but he retired last year and closed up shop.

Another thing to consider is freshwater fish are dirty. You will have to clean the tank often. I even had an expensive filter system and two weeks was pushing it for cleaning. I believe I had a 55 gallon. It was cool though, I had 2 crappies, 2 sunfish, 2 walleyes, and and a bass. Damn bass ate both walleyes. Even thought I always had a scoop of crappie minnows in there. Those walleyes were $20 each at the pet store! The crappies and sunfish got huge. They pigged out on those minnows. Bet the sunfish got dang near a pound. Every time I cleaned the tank I thought i killed them. I’d drain it 1/2 way sucking through the rocks, then fill it back up with water. The sunnies would lay on their sides on top for a half a day, then they’d be fine. Good luck it was fun for a few years. Just got to be to much work.

    For Christ (Easter) Sake!
Just do it and don’t worry. Who is going to rain down on you if you don’t exploit it? Flush them in the toilet if it doesn’t work out.

I kept a couple of saugers in my bait tank in the shop and never had to clean up after them.. and never had to feed them either..( they were in the pike minnow tank).. and the last day of the shop I turned them loose at the boat launch..

You never mentioned what size the tank was. For walleye and pike you would want a minimum of 125 gallons but bigger is better. Remember they need to be able to turn around. And sunnies are mean little monkeybuttes, I have had a few and they always rule the tank no matter what else you have in there. I’ve got 3 canister filters on my 220 gallon and only have to clean them about every 3 months and a water change about every other week of about 70 percent.
