Hey, I’m going to try turkey hunting this year. I went to a family farm on sunday to shoot my gun. Let’s just say I’m not going with the Remington nitro #5’s ( I bought a turkey choke and some winchester shells and now would like to try before hunting this weekend. Are there any places in the east or south metro where I could pattern this load at 40yds?

X3 for Bills. Circle Pines 50yd range is nice. Tom, the manager at CP is a riot.

Will Bill’s actually let you use a SHOTGUN? I’d call and specifically ask before going.

My suggestion would be the excellent and NOT maddeningly crowded Hudson Gun Club in Hudson, WI. Open to non-members, nice facilities, and generally not crowded. I would bring your own stakes or target stand for 40 yards since the first stop is at 50 on the rifle range.

Bring your standard full choke with as well. IMO there’s a bit of a fad with extremely tight chokes and what this can produce is deformed pellets that actually make the pattern worse, not better. If your superfull turkey isn’t doint it, try a shot with a standard full and the same load.

As of several years ago, they would (at Robbinsdale, at least). I know the Osseo Gun Club only allows slugs.

Yes, they do. Always be sure to let them know you will be shooting a shotgun and they will put you on a lane without a pillar next to it.

You have to bring your own target to these places?

I’ve never used the Prior Lake Horse and Hunt Club’s pattern target but its there for use. They have (or had, I haven’t been there in a couple years) a large metal plate with a can of spray paint handy. Paint the plate then put a round of shot in on it to see how it patterns. Repaint, make a change, and repeat.

Maybe it was only for lighter upland loads though. Like I said, I never used it. It was located on the farthest skeet range.
