We’re cleaning out my Father-in-law’s house and trying to put a price on his SeaKing outboard. It hasn’t been used in about 10 years but turns over and the prop turns easily. FIL was a diesel mechanic so it was well maintained. Several family members are interested but there’s a wide range in what they think it’s worth.

If it was only that easy. The disagreement is between the potential buyers and the family member in charge. I’m not interested in the motor. I’m just hoping my wife and her sisters are still talking to each other at the end of the day.

Sounds logical to me. Multiple buyers, who wants it the most.
    Take sealed bids.

Did you check eBay. A quick glance showed several for sale on there.

    Assuming it runs, $350-$400

For a running small outboard I would agree with Jon Jordan. If it has been sitting for 10 years it will probably need a new impeller and lower unit gear lube replaced. Personally I would not spend more than $100 on a outboard that needs to be fixed up, but I would be trying to turn a profit…

50’s Sea King if in good shape and the decals looking good will most likely be a wall hanger.

Ebay shows 70 bucks up to 350. Tell your wife and sis it isn’t worth fighting about. Greed really ruins people.
We are going through the same thing at grandma’s house. Luckily no one is fighting. I was put there all weekend with a antique dealer. Sell it all and let the estate build. Split it evenly. Took every thing sentimental and let the antiques go if no one wanted them

Vintage does not necessarily mean collectible. Mostly, it means old.

Usually, the person who thinks it has a lower value is the person who wants to buy it, and the person who thinks it has a higher value is the person who just wants the cash for it.

That motor is not valued any higher due to it’s age, unless it were in collectible condition. Probably needs a little work to be used on a boat. Probably needs a lot of work to be worthy of hanging on the wall at a bar/restaurant or even the neighbor’s garage. So to most, it is just another old 5 hp outboard worth a couple hundred bucks.
