Looking at a new ice fishing rod

I’m wanting to get a new ice fishing rod and I’ve narrowed it down to two: 30″ ML St. Croix Legend Black or the 30″ Precision TUCR. I’ve heard great things about the Precision rod and was leaning towards that, but saving $35 is something I don’t mind doing and I’ve had success with St. Croix. My target species range from crappies to walleye and I have other rods for panfish already.

Does anyone have experience with both the rods or just the St. Croix Legend?

I own a few St. Croix rods and they are really nice. Definitely one of my favorite brands. I don’t know what the advantages of the TUCR rod would be, but I think the St. Croix would get the job done if you’re not too picky

That’s a tough choice. I was in the same boat when I was debating getting my first custom rod. I was given the advice to ask myself if I would ever see myself wanting the custom rod in the future, and I yes, get it sooner than later. I was also advised to go cheaper on the reel and higher on the rod. I’m glad I did, now I have a few $30-40 rods that I don’t use anymore vs a few $70 rods I feel guilty about not using.

I just ordered a TUCR Precision myself about a week ago so I obviously don’t have it yet. But what made me not hesitating in ordering it was I have had a TUCR Fusion I used all of last year and it’s a darn impressive rod. I have 2 St. Croix light action rods that ran about $60 each. They both have straight line reels on them and are used for pan fish. I like them just fine but the Fusion was in my hand for Walleye and pan fish most of last year. I liked the Fusion so much I got one for my son for his birthday this year. I described the rod to him this way. It’s a excellent pan fish rod, a darn fun Walleye rod and the perfect Devils Lake Jumbo Perch rod!

I’m really excited to get the Precision and see if that will get the Fusion out of my hand more.

I was in a similar situation last year. I wanted a rod for perch and lighter bite walleyes. Already having the Commander, my first thought was to get the Precision. I had a post on here and someone suggested the Fusion as being a good crappie/perch rod that will handle walleyes too.

My understanding is that the action is quite different between the Precision and Fusion too. The Precision is more of a fast action tip with a quicker transition to the backbone whereas the Fusion is a softer tip with the transition to the backbone being further back in the blank allowing some light bites to be visible before feeling the hit

I ended up with the Fusion since when Im out targeting walleye, I will go with the Commander to start then downsize to the Fusion for smaller baits.

Overall, Im very happy with the Fusion

I have a precision and am looking to add a fusion from TUCR.

I think if your targeting crappie and walleye then you would want the fusion instead of the precision. The fusion has a softer tip for detecting crappie while the precision has a little stiffer tip. Both rods are “feel” rods in that you will actually feel the bite go through the rod to your hand/arm. But you will gain some sensitivity on bites from the precision. I think that you will be able to handle a decent sized walleye on a fusion. Overall there is not really a great rod to handle sensitive bites from crappies well and handle larger walleye. I use my precision for perch/walleye in ND and do a lot of rattle spoons and larger baits on that and have other rods for panfish from TUCR.

I would call TUCR direct and ask them questions or you can facebook message but I think that your right on the of a precision and fusion they may be able to help more. Either rod is nice just if you want to use it for panfish sometimes then I think the fusion is the way to go. Good Luck.

Thank you for all your input thus far. I should clarify that I plan to target other species and not just crappie and walleye. I target whitefish as well and I want to go for perch and bass this coming season.

I own a 24″ ML St. Croix Legend Silver as well as other rods, but that was what I mainly used for my ice fishing trips the last 2-3 seasons. It has served me well, but I would like a longer rod for my main rod.

I have two precisions, 32″ and a 36″. I use the 32″ inside my shack and the 36″ when hole hopping. The precision is very sensitive and well balanced. I would also recommend looking at the Fusion or the Quicktip. Pending on where you live, you could stop at their shop and take a look.

If fishing for mainly walleye, I’d go with the Precision, and if you’re fishing mainly crappie I’d go with the Fusion or QuickTip.

The 1st tucr I got was a 28″ precision and it seemed a little light for walleye. I got a 32″ and it is like two different rods. The longer the more backbone you get. If I was going to go to a lake with perch, crappie and walleye with one rod I would probably go with the 28″ precision over the 32″ fusion just because of the backbone.

Can’t really go wrong with either.
