It was that time of the year again for the annual “Guys Trip” to Lake of the Woods. We are a bit later this year compared to years past but it really makes no difference to us. With a little research on the ole interweb you will find out that things are a bit slow up there. Leaving at 2am Friday morning is not getting any easier for us but it makes for an extra full day of fishing. We arrived with plenty of time to spare Friday morning and had a little breakfast in Baudette at the Northlake Café. Great service and great food. We arrived and Longpoint and drove out the houses. We were in 34 feet of water and a fresh spot. We came out swinging with all of our usual lures but the fish were slow. Pretty typical in that deep of water that they were not there yet. The fishing was pretty bleak until around 9am and it pick up a bit. We had decent action from 9-3 on Friday. Some of the highlight lures were Slender spoons, Demons and pink tingler spoon. Just before lunch I was blessed with a beautiful 28 ½” beast that was CPR’ed. Saturday brought much of the same except we had some pretty good winds on the lake. The fishing was definitely slower with more traffic on the lake. Highlight of Saturday was a 26” true whitefish caught by my buddy Vince. I have caught many tullies over the years but never a whitefish. I also had a chance to use a Buzzreel for the first time. We thought we were going to get stuck with a 6 hole ice house for (4) guys so I opted to bring the Buzzreel. These guys were featured on Minnesota Bound and I looked them up. I plan on giving them a true test this upcoming weekend locally. The resort itself had every icehouse rented for the weekend and was booked for next weekend also. Looks like there are quite a fee taking advantage of low gas prices. Good luck, get out there and take a kid fishing!

Nice job. I was supposed to go up this weekend but cancelled recently because of the reports and I thought for sure this weekend would be the first we could sled. Still not enough snow so I got caught with no plans this weekend. Now I wish I hadn’t cancelled LOTW.
