Long shot question

2-3 years ago I bought 2 new St. Croix spinning rods. Paired them both with high end Shimano reels. One I used maybe 4 times until last weekend. After setting the hook I was reeling in the fish (12″ Walleye) and the plastic just broke. It was the piece between the the part that attaches to the rod and the reel it’s self. The straight piece. I was surprised to say the least. grin I’m sure there is no warranty claim to be made but I would like to talk to somebody to see if there was a design flaw on that model. Like I say it’s spent far more time in the rod locker and in the shed then being used.

    Any idea’s?

    Dutch,

I have notice a lot of flexing in my newer shimano reels, especially with bigger fish. I hope I am not headed down the same path as you. My reels are not in the same class as your Saros though.

Let us know how things go if you decide to contact Shimano.

What size of braid is that? The reel maxes at 10 pound, according to the spool. That braid looks like rope.

It’s 15 lb. Power Pro but that had nothing to do with the break. It wasn’t much of a fish or much of a hook set. Very little previous use with no big fish at all.

Thanks Jeff, it never occurred to me that it might be repairable. I’ll get back to you in the next few days.

    Thanks.

Shouldn’t matter. The manufacturer puts that on to tell you how much Mono it will hold. Not what it is rated for. As long as you have drag set properly you can use 1000lb power pro and nothing should be affected, except for line capacity.

Heck most of these reels have completely interchangeable parts between them. The only difference usually is the spool and bail size.

Update: sent the reel into Jeff to be repaired. He did a outstanding job, looks just like new. Pricing was more then fair I thought.
