Long Rod Recommendations

Seen someone using a long rod this weekend on Pool 10 for panfish and they looked like a fun tool to have. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on long rod builders and if anyone else here uses them for shallow water pannies in the backwaters? Thanks!

My buddy who is an ice fishing nut always uses one of those cheap HT multicolored rods, I think it’s 36 or 42 inches. Guy gets after hard and isn’t short on dough, but that’s the one he uses and likes.

Most of mine are 42-46″ I have an assortment of different blanks, but most are graphite flyrod tip sections from 2 and 3wt rods

I’ve played around with longer rods for ice fishing. Was not a fan. Way to much tip movement if any wind and even without wind the tip seemed to bounce around a lot. Maybe in real shallow water it would be nice to stand back a little from the hole to not spook a fish. Otherwise I don’t see any advantage

U use my normal summertime 5′ ultralight ugly stick. Just gotta move the chair back a bit. Move it back even more and I can get some casting practice in too.

I have a few long rods, they can be hard to find. There is a place that make custom long rods that run the line inside the blank. Too spendy for the 2-3 times a year I use them.

I build my hole hopping panfish rods at 44-45.” It lets me get the tip of the rod to the water so wind isn’t pushing my line. Love fishing with them but they are a pain to deal with sometimes. Made rod protectors out of 1 1/4 pvc and usually just throw them on the dash of the truck.

Yes. This guy had one with a reel on the end of the rod and the line ran through the blank. Idk if it’s a southwest Wisconsin/mississppi backwater exclusive but it looked cool. I seen some at the bait shop in Lansing and Guttenberg, IA, but they looked too expensive, like $250 and I was wondering if someone local on here made them for less.

Oddly enough, I called that guy regarding his rods and I like them, but they aren’t the length I was wanting, even though his price was fair. I also was looking for someone who could make mine a certain color combo, and he didn’t do custom orders. Perhaps I will just have to dig into my pocket book a little deeper.

Chuck, the bite was slow. We were fishing Sunfish Lake and we also tried some backwaters around the East Dubuque area and caught some smaller crappies and perch, and a small northern on a tip up. The long rod guy was having a better day then I. Size must matter, despite what the wife keeps telling me. coffee mrgreen

Dick smith’s live bait & tackle sells the “pulsator” long rods. They are conveniently out of stock at the moment. My favorite one is a frabill jiggler, but they have been discontinued for many years.

I keep a few Ugly Sticks in the long/short youth rod configurations.

    36″ Dock Runner
    4’6″ Ugly UL.

Great for the lazy lounge chair dozing off fishing.

Was the guy you saw with the long rods on Sunfish?
The bite around there and up the river has sucked since early Jan.
