Oops-plus I was out of town. Called AAA and they would not send help ‘off road” They did reluctently hook me up with a guy who came out but they would not pay. The guy told me next time (no next time please) to tell 3A that you are at the resort meet the guy and then tell him you are on the lake(and maybe tip him) I will pack a spare key next time. Hope this can help someone.

I did the same thing years ago. It was bitter cold and I was setting up a spear house. I had to pry open my back slider in my old Ford pick up. Then poke at the power lock button with my chisel. It was before I owned a cell phone. Funny how we survived back then. Glad it worked out for you. applause

That’s one of the benefits of a late model Ford is the keypad on the door. Just don’t forget the combination and you won’t get locked out.

I always zip tie a key to the frame. Just don’t forget to put it back when you use it. coffee

I’ve got a key pad on the door also, real nice feature.
As a side note; the doors are flexible enough to pry open a corner, block it open at that point, reach in with a gaff and trip the door unlock button. Same thing the locksmith will do if/when he gets there.

I keep a key in the vehicle, the key fob and keys never leave my pocket.

I had a spare key cut ( minus the fob )to open my door just in case I lock my keys in my truck. I carry it in my wallet. It comes in handy for certain times I’m out fishing or hunting and want to lock my main set of keys in the truck VS carrying them with me.

I do the same as Deertracker. Zip tie a spare on the truck somewhere hidden. Most keys today are chipped to start the ignition. I hide an un-chipped key. Will open the door, but not start the truck. Then I keep a spare chipped key hidden inside the truck.

    LOL!

Several years ago, I made a spring day-trip to fish some waters a few hours from home. It was a pretty remote area, and my cell service was spotty to non-existent. As I was getting ready to head home, I absent-mindedly set my keys in the trunk as I loaded up. Just as I was slamming the trunk shut, I remembered that the keys were in there. doah

I picked the smallest window and found a big rock…

Buddies loaded up F150 Platinum does not have the keypad, but boy it likes to beep the horn and flash its lights at you every time you close those doors. It conditions you to have that AH #$%@ moment a couple dozen times a trip when the truck is idling on the ice.

In 2012 my brothers and I headed to Mille Lacs in -20 weather. Got to our spot, both of my brothers get out, I attempt to step out and slip, I try to catch myself on my door and fail miserably…I end up on the ground outside the drivers door with the door shut from the wind…My brother says “we left the house key in the truck”. He walks over to the door and LOCKED. Truck running, -20 out and we’re locked out of the truck and house! Make a quick call to AAA and they hook me up with a tow truck driver. He calls me back about 10 minutes later and says “Do you have anything heavy? It will be far cheaper for you to break your window…”

So we look around for ANYTHING…All we had was my Kahr PM9…So I unload it, double check all clear, lay my coat down below the window and give her the juice! Not my proudest moment when we pull into the Portside in Isle asking for a box to tape my window up…All they had was a Bud light box…I thought, “great, now we’re getting pulled over on the way home for suspected drunk driving…”

I have learned my lesson with this instance and after that I would always crack my window if I EVER left my keys in the truck. Now I own a Ford with a keypad, all is well…

I know this isn’t the point of this thread, but as a firearms instructor who has seen and heard horror stories of all kinds of stupidity, I cannot say enough how awesome it is that you not only did this (I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t) but that you included it in your story.

This. When at a boat ramp my keys are usually locked in the vehicle. :shh:
No chance of them falling in the drink that way.

Windows down for me, for this reason in the winter and due to the dog in the summer. She loves locking up the truck accidentally.

Seems like you can do anything these days with a phone.

Best thing to do with an AAA card is use it to scrape windows with it.Crap service at best, wonder if there is better?AAA does stuff in their favor, not yours. They seem to look for the cheapest and slowest.Their service has slid down hill the past few years.Break a window IS cheaper and faster it seems.

everything I can find on the interwebs says this is a Dodge/Chrysler product and is only available for dodge/Chrysler vehicles. Nice try though

I didn’t lock mine in the truck on the ice, but I did lock them inside it running this year on New Years Eve. Not a big deal cause I bought the F150, right? Well it was a big deal because I failed to remember the code and it was in the glovebox. So my wife had to get all three of our little ones of our bed and bring me a spare. Safe to say, I know the code now…

GM has this, too, but I can’t recall what they call it. I’ve obviously never set it up. )

I think they still use OnStar and I believe it’s the RemoteLink App. Can lock, unlock, remote start, etc. with it.

yeah. big_g was just doing some product pushing. its called branding when you assign a specific company’s brand to a universal service.

Managed to lock myself out of my truck when coyote hunting last winter, the last stand of the evening on a Sunday. And to make things worse, I had gotten this truck that spring and never got around to getting a spare key cut and hiding it under the frame like I’ve done with every vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Luckily, Mrs. Grouse was home so I figured it would be faster and cheaper for her to just get the spare key and drive to bring me. Took an hour and a half, but there comes Mrs. Grouse’s little Lincoln SUV churning through the snow down the field road…

Needless to say, I got a spare key cut and hidden the next week. Thing about it is to make a habit of going to check it once in a while to a) make sure it’s still there, and b) remind myself of WHERE it is.

What I do is I have a magnetic key holder with a spare, purchased at Menards. I put it under the top rail of my GM pick up boxes. I don’t have to worry about it not being there and it has never fallen off into the box. Did this after locking keys in truck, haven’t ever had to use it though. yay

Thats makes it worse that he didn’t mention it’s a dodge product. That’s the idea behind branding is you want a person to think YOUR product is the only one or the best one and you want a person to associate uconnect (dodge product) with smart phone remote start/unlock. My cheap shot hit the mark

If he worked for ford and he encouraged others to get it I probably would.
