Locating 'Gills On A Large Lake With Humminbird

After I retire, I’ll be living on a large hydro-electric impoundment and will be fishing close to home from a canoe and electric motor. I will be fishing for Bluegills & Crappie. I’m thinking about getting a Humminbird Helix 5 to help me find the fish. Do I need to purchase a Side Image unit or would a Down Image unit be adequate? If anyone has additional tips and tricks, please feel free to share.

    Thanks

Side imaging can certainly help finding beds and suspended fish when they move to the basins; if you can, i would try to jump to the 7, every inch in the screen size helps when trying to interpret imaging

As an FYI, I just picked up the Helix 7 GPS G2 SI for $600 on Amazon through Johnson Outdoors. This model is one step down from their G2N model which features I-Pilot link. No review of the unit yet, but hope to have good things to say after 4 days on the water with it this week.
