Are there any stores in the NW/Northern metro area that have lead for pouring jigs? If the answer to the question is yes, then what stores are they? Thanks in advance.

I would ask plumbers that have been taking out old pipes. There was lead used to hold some cast iron fittings together and you can get quite a bit pretty fast. My brother saves his to use when he pours. Maybe one can steer you in the right direction.

Tire shops too. They may part with discarded tire balancer weights.

Wheel weights can be a problem today with so many made of harder metals and alloys. Try some recycling centers or scrap yards and look for lead in sheets or in the 5 pound pigs mentioned that plumbers once used. Take a pliers along when you go to scrap yards and if they want to sell you lead that’s be melted and cast into solid ingots give them a rap with the pliers….alloyed lead will ring. Pure lead will go thud pretty much.

Bunch of metal shops off Washington /2nd Ave North MPLS, would give them a ring. Might want to flag down those metal trash guys who go up and down alleys as well, they might be able to get ya some here and there.

Has anyone tried shotgun shell lead shot? It might be harder than soft lead but I don’t see why that would matter if you’re just pouring jigs or sinkers.

Forget the scrap yards. The last one in N Mpls stopped selling to the public 4-5 years ago. (
Wheel weights have one heck of a lot of fumes. If you think you want to go that way, pre melt and clean it outdoors. Please!

Ebay and Craigs list for me if I ever need any again.

I have a few pounds if you want it. One chunk of lead pipe and a few pieces of joint lead.

Some manufacturers use arsenic as a hardening agent in lead shot and melting it down will likely release it

I bought some “lead ingots” off a shooting range in Pennsylvania. Fairly cheap, and shipped quickly as well. I will be ordering on line when i need lead

With lead pipe, how much space do you need? I have a pretty small melting pot. Trying to figure out how it would fit in there.

In a pinch I have gone to the local shooting range and mined lead from the backstops. Stained glass co. usually have some lead.

roofing companies get a lot of lead by pulling the old lead sewer vent caps off when they put a new roof on, that’s where most of mine has come from, vent cap lead is about perfect for sinkers, call the local roofing companies and leave your number and when they tear off an old 3 or 4 layer roof they take that old lead off too.

The vent flashing was likely lead also. I haven’t seen many sewer vent caps compared to the vent flashing on the roof

Jeremy, I believe that was what Mossy was refering to, as in a vent cap flashing because it caps the top of the pipe ring not like in a gas vent where it covers the top, if you understand me.

After a few years of use my downrigger weights can get pretty banged up. I’ve recently switched over to using some pipe stick weights and now have about 40 lbs. of lead for melting.

If you know any dirt track stock car drivers check with them, Usually they will put lead bars on the frame to get the car to hook up better. I got a few 50 lb bars from my uncle this way.
