Looking at opening the season on a river. Stretch I’m looking at is slow with lots of nice backwaters. Any tips for fishing a system like this? Do I want to go way way back into the backwaters or do I want to look for slack water by the channel? Think some of the best water for stuff around 6 is in rivers. Thanks

Go into the backwaters. Find grass, mats, lily pads, anything that you can pitch into. Texas rigged creature bait will get you bit.

LaCrosse area is really good in the spring for bass fishing. There’s endless backwater areas that warm up sooner than main river branches. Plopping a hollow frog in there can be productive and exciting.

Thanks-so early on they can be way back, by the time our season opens I would think they would at least be staging near spawning areas, so near hard bottom.

All depends on what the back waters offer. Water is low this year so that’ll change that up quite a bit. Especially the stretch I fish. Lot of the back waters won’t even be accessible unless we get alot of rain.
6 pound fish are more common then one thinks. Just have to pick the right lakes.

In the early season the backwaters is the place to be. You cant go wrong with throwing a Swimjig to cover water. If there is a lot of wood cover I’d pick it apart with a Jig and pig or a texas rigged worm. Early spring fish often hold tight to wood cover for the warmth. I’ve actually seen bass spawn on the wood cover.
