Great show and absolutely huge. Spent 2 hrs in the convention expo hall. I’d say I covered 5 percent of the booths.

Now in an advanced reloading seminar sponsored by Hornady.

Years ago, when the FW and I were looking for our first house, a house that we looked at had a note telling us “don’t touch what is under the sheet in the basement.” Well…c’mon. Of course I could not resist. There was a damn stuffed lion under there!!! )

I saw that Glenn Beck is doing the key note tomorrow night and will have some guns from his collection.

Absolutely everything under the sun here. Every type of game on earth. Every piece of hunting gear ever made.

Just a few pics. There are endless aisles just like this in the expo area.

Every type of gun maker is here. From Purdy to Remington.

    Unbelievable taxidermy displays.

I’m officially back after 2 days of the SCI show, so a quick wrap-up.

This is the Mac-Daddy of hunting shows and there’s something at SCI for everyone. Absolutely everyone.

Several people have asked me if this show is exclusively or nearly exclusively about African and other “exotic location” hunting? While there is certainly a significant representation of African hunting at this show, they were easily outnumbered by North American outfitters. There was representation of hunting on every continent except Antarctica, so it’s certainly not all about Africa.

There was also a lot of really neat “Made in USA” gear. Backpacks, hunting accessories, clothing, etc. I’ll list a few of my favorites.

Finally, it was fantastic to see manufacturer booths that showed a broad range of the manufacturers products in one place. I spent a terrific half hour at the Minox USA booth carefully comparing Minox binoculars and spotting scopes. This is really valuable as often retailers only carry select models for a given manufacturer, so it’s very useful to be able to look at more offerings in each product line and to be able to compare.

I don’t have much to say about the show location, it’s Vegas and Vegas is Vegas. I will say that in my eternal quest to avoid “strip food”, I discovered a fantastic BBQ joint called Rollin Smoke BBQ. It’s about 5 blocks off the strip, and like all good BBQ joints, the initial impression it gives is that you might be in the wrong place and should probably turn around. But then I saw the line in front of the counter and nothing by good stuff would have people lining up like that. Awesome. 5 stars. The beef ribs are to die for as is the Arkansas hot link.

Even as a manufacturer’s rep, this is a hard hurdle to cross. Stores can not afford to stock everything. Buyers can not buy everything, but reps need to suggest everything. I just wished there was a magic crystal ball that enabled a buyer to look at an entire product line and be able to see what all would sell. Much too often, store buyers see hundreds/thousands of items and have to guess at which will sell well in their store. 99% of what they look at will NEVER see the store shelf for you, the consumer to look at.

Just a quick question simply out of curiosity. If you buy a gun there can it be checked on the plane on the return trip or do you have to ship it?

Sounds like a pretty cool show! I really enjoy looking at taxidermy and this sounds like the mother load!

You can carry a gun as checked baggage on any domestic flight. Procedures vary slightly by airline, but generally its pretty easy.

And oh boy were there guns…
