Lithium marine batteries

Does anyone run lithium marine batteries for their trolling motors yet? I’m debating if I want to go this route. The extra space and weight savings would be great, but I’m really looking at improving my re-charge time. I charge my boat a lot off a generator, and I really hate running it at night after a long day of fishing.

With all of the recent news accounts of lithium batteries blowing up and starting fires, do you really want one in your boat?

I was told by a guy that sells them that they create a lot of heat and you’d probably have to install a fan. You can also not put them right next to each other. There has also been some fires started with them… so I was told. He said, ” just don’t “. That was enough info for me to not even consider it.

I’m not worried about a fire, those are mostly all cheaply made with poor design and charging setups. Lots of cars have them, I’ve really only heard about a Tesla fire or two. If the boat started on fire, worst case you’d need to get wet.

It looks like your mind is already made up, you are just looking for approval from some fellow fishermen. I suggest adding a few more fire extinguishers and maybe going up a size or two and have at it. Most likely you will be good to go, I just hope that when that fire does happen, it is during the summer and you don’t have to jump into 40deg water

Dont forget your survival suit. You could probably get a used one cheap from Dutch Harbor.

My minds not really made up. I’m just looking for some real world info that is more local than what I’ve found available. Pretty sure if I happen to find myself around a lithium battery fire, I’d just abandon ship asap and deal with it. I’ve been wet in the cold before, will be again I’m sure.

A lot of guys are using the lithium ion batteries for this purpose already. If you have the money to get them then I would get them everyday of the week. $1200 a piece is what I heard on them. I have been looking to power my bad boy buggy with lithium batteries for quite some time. Finding the affordable way to do it is the hard part. I have had quotes for $6,000-$8,000. It would take the range from 20-30 miles to 200 miles. A guy on Youtube did it that is very well educated about lithium batteries. He has built several vehicles and utv’s with them. If you have the money, get them you won’t regret it from the sounds of it. Guys above most likely were against the internet as well when it first started and its not so bad.

Ask Chris Lane of the Bassmaster Elite Series He did not have cheap batteries when his boat started on fire last tour

I’m all for it. But I’m going to wait. With the r&d that the auto industry is putting into batteries they are going to get better and cheaper at a rapid rate

The weight reduction will be nice. And getting away from lead cannot be bad.
I am constantly amazed at how lite the lithium battery is in my ion.

None of them are cheap by any means. The problem is there are a bunch of lithium batteries that they tried to make in China with cheap labor and found out that they didn’t meet a lot of requirements. Even the 3.2 volt lithium cells they were making before were dangerous. Now there are some coming certified with a warranty!
