Lithium battery winter storage

My boat gets stored in an unheated pole barn, no electricity. I usually bring my batteries into my house over the winter. Now with lithiums, I’m concerned with how safe it is to have them sitting in a big tote in my laundry room (no basement). I’m not sure if it’s safe to leave them in the boat.

If you just have the battery’s in a tote with no metal objects to pierce the casing or short the cells, then they should be just fine. If your house catches fire and the lithium battery’s get to a point where they are compromised and ignite, then they will burn. But I’d view that as a moot point.

LiFePO4 is pretty stable and safe. It’s not good to store them below about -10 so inside is better. They should only discharge about 3% a month but it can be more on the extreme ends of temperature range. It’s also bad for them to be completely empty for long periods so make sure they are sufficiently charged for the storage period or charge them once in awhile.
