I tried nanofil for a week ice fishing and I will never use it again, as soon as it started to freeze up, and I ran it through my fingers, it would fray and snap in my hand. I will never trust it.

The Nano lines I have and have used in cold weather have not ever snapped just by sliding it between pinched fingers when below freezing. One of my favorite ways to get crappies on the big river is to fish marina dock pilings after the boats have been put away for the winter. I get into a huge variety of fish including some darned big walleyes and catfish [channels] and pike while jigging 3 pound Nano and its unusual to break off even if there is ice on the water.

Tom – do you find it necessary to tie a leader on when using 3# nano?

No, I don’t Joel. I use the white product and haven’t had any apparent fish shying incidents. Really, the 3 pound is like a hair. One does have to take specific care to clean all of the paint from the entire lure eye. Paint is the only issue I have ever really had to deal with and most of the time if I break off its because the eye wasn’t completely cleaned.

As for knots and Nano, the stuff is super slick and knots can be testy. I run the line thru the eye, then tie a slip knot in the end of the line and knot it twice. Then I pass the lure thru the loop and pull out the slack. Works great, ties fast and the Nano has never slipped on me using it.

3 lb Nano has been snapping off right and left for me. Breaks in all the weirdest of places fishing Crappies. It ain’t abrasion or the knot, just been bad for me. Love the casting performance though. I may try the 6-8lb for eyes but my confidence in the quality is low.

6lb nano is my favorite line for pitching light jigs. I pitched to the rocks all winter long and never had a break off. 10-12 twists on the clinch knot with a 1/4″ tag will do the job.

Maybe start checking your guides. Sweep a q-tip around the guide on BOTH sides. You might be surprised how much shedding the cotton will do on even guides that are apparently new. I have zero issues with 3 pound Nano.

I use nanofil for pitching and jigging. I use 10 lb fir line on my rod I use for cranks and I think it get the hooks in better. I like mono for everything else though. Braid and nanofil are too expensive to use for everything.
