The Okuma coldwater 303D or 453D look super nice.
I have Diawa Sealines and I will be upgrading to the coldwaters.
Cabelas Depthmaster or Okuma Accudepth will get you going on the cheap, if that’s what you’re looking for. Otherwise I would look at the Okuma Convector and Daiwa Sealine, like Ski Junkie has. Both are good reels and cost around $100.
I did some more reading and the Okuma coldwater isn’t so good after all.
My Diawa Sealine has “reely” (hehehehe) good reviews but it looks like the Shimano Tekota is the best but its much spendier.
Does the Tekota only come in right?
I’m pretty sure they only come in right hand drive.
Stupid question but do ppl really care if it’s left hand or right hand reel for line counters reels ?
I previously recommended a Cabelas Depthmaster, I can no longer recommend it. Pulled it out last night to get ready for the weekend and the line now pulls over 4.5′ per 1′ on the counter…looks like I need another Magda…

The Cabela’s Depthmasters are Okuma Magdas. Just different colors, put the two side by side.

The internals are not the same. I have both apart on my kitchen table as we speak. Depthmaster 20 and Magda 20DX. They may be made my Okuma, but they are not identical.

This can happen with any line counter. The accuracy of the counter is dependent on the amount of line spooled up. Ideally, you’d want to have the spool full for the best results. What I have done in the past is get a measuring tape and note what my line counter says to what it actually is. For example, 40 on the counter is actually 30, and so on all the way up to 150 since I wouldn’t ever have more than that out. So I want 150ft of line out, my counter may actually read 180.
I bought 4 cabela’s depthmasters on the cheap 4 years ago and not one of them has failed me yet. Slowly been upgrading my set, but the cabelas still work as they should.
I was just wondering what’s a good lead core line to use ?
Suffix (not the 832) I get the 18lb.
Scheels has it!!!
I got my reel all lined up and ready and I put on a 30′ fluorocarbon leader on it is that to long ?

Depends. If I’m trolling over 3 mph I like that much to absorb the hit. If I’m not worried about the shock and just visibility, 6-10′ is plenty.
The more mono/flouro the less you can feel your crank. 2c
If I’m pounding sand I like braid leader, even though it is less abrasion resistance it helps understand just how well your hitting bottom and easier to rip the rod and clean the crank when dirty.
I use 30′ leader of fireline on my leadcore rods. This matches up with the dive charts in the Trollers Guide. Lure depth plus 5ft per 30 ft of lead gets you pretty close.
I made a chart from 1.5-5mph, depth, and line out. It is fantastic to not have to do the math on the boat when your going 1.5 times the speed of nominal leadcore (2mph 30′, 7’dive).
Just look at you gps for speed, look up the depth you want to be at and set your line out accordingly. Simply awesome accompanied with calibrated line counters. Of course you still gotta guess at the speed of the current but that isn’t too difficult to get within .25mph.
Got to try out the new line counter worked really good just have to learn how to keep a good depth
8 Diawa Sealine’s here. Great reels so far with no issues. I honestly don’t care about the calibration of a leadcore setup. I run 10 foot Mono leads and figure 6ft for each color. If I start getting fish with a certain rod, then I look at what the number is and just start letting out the same length on all rods.
I have the same amount of backing and the same amount of colors on 4 of them so they’re pretty close.
As for the other 4, they’re just long liners that are calibrated to 100 ft on the nuts.
