Lindy Rigs by the damn

I haven’t fished near the dam much before, but tried it last week. When using lindy rigs, are you constantly changing the weights? I noticed I almost needed an 1oz weight near the dam, in the current to keep it on or near the bottom. As I drifted away from it, I would have to change to a lighter sinker, due to the reduction in current.
Using such a heavy weight made bite detection difficult.
(Sorry if this is such a basic question)

If you need to use a weight that heavy you are most likely fishing in a current that is too fast to hold fish…
Try sliding horizontal in the river channel to see if you get different results with weight needed.

If fishing 45° or less, 3 ways I prefer for heavy current. Keeps bait off bottom rather pinned down. If there are good eddys underwater I’ve never been afraid of heavy current. Especially this year with lower levels.

From my personal experience, I would recommend a braid or hard line for your main line as this will held transmit some of the bites. I have noticed that depending on the situation in rivers, if I use a live bait slip rig I often don’t feel the bite as much as I feel weight when lifting the line slightly. This is especially true if I am using a floating jighead or just a plain hook and live bait as that bait is “free-floating” and always moving around in the current and not always on a tight line to allow you to feel the bite.

    Good luck,
    Dave
