    Matt
I see it through different eyes than you as I grew up there in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The good ole days.

I know the population has increased but –
    Violent – Murder – Rape – Assault

It does makes me feel good about your experience in the city that I grew up in.
I will keep the faith that the leaders will do a good job.

Precinct 3 is also far from uniform. Heck of a difference between powderhorn lake and lake nokomis.

I may not carry a baton in my car but to be fair I have a beaver gun in case a rowdy beaver comes at me while I’m shore fishing so I guess we all have our safety concerns while down by the river.

Because this is a lot different than all the guys that don’t live in the city but insist on CC everyday.

I knew when I posted this that a certain few posters would sieze the opportunity to cry “the city is a cesspool!”

Another good trip to the river this morning.

Still waiting on a call back from the responding officer, not gonna hold my breath.

It is not as nice of a city as it was when I grew up there.

That may be your experience but I don’t see how it’s helpful. I’ll never experience what Saint Paul was like in the 70s or 80s anymore than you’ll know what Rome was like before Nero. It’s still the most appealing place to live in the state for me today at this stage in my life.

I agree…there are a lot of posters on IDO that claim the city is a cesspool but have never spent anytime here except maybe going to a Vikings or a Wild game.

EPG…my folks had a place near Harriet in the mid 70’s. The city was giving away homes with low interest loans to try and clean it up. They moved because that area was too unsafe for them. This idea that the city was better a few decades ago is a fallacy. We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this.

Matt – as a person who lived in the Metro for over 30 Years of my life ( Richfield, South Minneapolis, Bloomington, Burnsville, Savage ) I will not say its a Cesspool, but I can say that I am more than happy to not be in the area anymore. I saw all the changes it went through and most were not for the better. I know several people who live in the city and are happy with it. Just not for me. I know if I still lived there and spend much time in the downtown area’s, I’d carry 100% of the time.

Macalaster-Groveland and Highland Park (StP) and Longfellow and Nokomis (MPLS) are still pretty nice areas of the cities. I mention these four because they all touch the river. I have spent almost 40 years in those neighborhoods about once or twice a month … even living there for 6 months or so. I would say those areas are still very nice and remain pretty safe. I have no issue walking in either area … People are still trying to move there at a pretty good pace.

That said, you do not have to go too far to find trouble and trouble skirts in and out of those areas on occasion. The city and the press do a pretty good job keeping the violence reports quietly hidden.

Every different town has good and bads. Heck even in town here there is a certain park i won’t let the kids go to because the wanna be ghetto crackheads hang out there day and night. But that said I’ve been spending 70 80 hours a week in and around st Paul, Minneapolis for 16 years plus. I see way more messed up stuff in the metro then I do anywhere else, that doesn’t mean it’s trash hole but it definitely is the cess pool of scum. They just usually stick to certain areas. But those areas are growing daily. Still plenty of great neighborhoods and areas but there is 100 times the sketchy crowds then you’ll find most anywhere else. It’s almost as bad as the pine city wal mart chased

More people more crackheads. Fairly simple equation. Of course you are not going to see as many crackheads when your population is 8,000.
Plenty of crackheads in Duluth St. Cloud and Rochester areas. Again more people than X country city.

Been through plenty of small towns that the last time a building was updated was 1972. Crackheads population is probably low when there is 400 of the same people that have lived there their whole life.

I live a mile west of Nokomis. You’re right you don’t have to go far to find trouble…that’s called Richfield. Don’t drive through there at night. jester

60 recently planted trees were ripped out by the Mississippi river in the St. Paul area.

Sounds like someone with hostility issues like the OP’s perp. Maybe additional anger from a encounter with police.

Saw that. Trees were planted by high school kids for a service project. 40k worth of damage.

On one hand it was great to see local high school kids doing work like that. I know that they outnumber the idiot(s) who did this but it’s sad to see how quickly good work can be undone.

From the map I saw this appeared to be downtown St Paul along shepherd road.

Heard back from the police today so I figured I would update.

They believe he was out of his mind on narcotics and/or having a mental health crisis and was hallucinating. He was down in the park with a girl and basically hallucinating that the girl was his ex wife and that I was involved with her. The girl given a ride to someplace safe. The guy was taken to the hospital as opposed to jail. Which I’m fine with.

I’m not too concerned with him tracking me down now that I have confirmation that he was in no mental condition to be remembering my plate number or even that I exist. I can see in hindsight how unlikely it would be but at the time I first posted it was pretty fresh.

Anyway. Don’t do narcotics boys and girls. Thanks everyone for a lively and wide ranging discussion.

Glad you got some closure. Your post was a good reminder that the best of times, our normal daily lives, can be interrupted for the worse any time. I’m not saying that in a always carry vs. live scared sense, just a good reminder for those to take it however they wish.
