BC ouch that made me laugh. Pepper spray it is. I can strap it to my pink Stanley cup so it’s always available jester

That wasn’t a insult. You said you don’t own a firearm. So maybe carry that just incase the situation went further. Same thing I’d tell my buddies and co workers who don’t carry. You now see how fast a situation can go bad. Peppers spray is a good protector. Sorry if you feel insulted

Takes a lot more than that to insult me, it was a good chuckle. All good here

Honestly I’m kinda starting to worry about homeless dudes safety. You know who he is, where he stays, what his name is, his criminal history, even what his ladies bazongas look like. But if he tries calling DMV for your info, first they aren’t gonna answer their phones, and second he can only ask Y/N questions, like is this plate registered to dirtywater? Some information is available but not much and nobody is going to not be suspicious of a crackhead with a license plate number and nothing else.(this is not the advice or opinion of either a state or local DMV office, just an opinion of an individual).

“Like most women do” — kinda implies I’m a woman. But I’m not definitely not above carrying pepper spray, point taken.

Most women do carry pepper spray. Because they don’t carry firearms. That was covered in the cc class and all self defense classes I’ve taken. If I was trying to insult you I would have said something insulting. I was trying to give you a further option on what might be smart to carry on your morning or evening walks.

you weren’t making a joke or trying to insult me. Got it. Not the first time someone misread an internet comment. Let’s move on eh?

Back at the river with my girl this morning. We talked an extra minute about neutralizing threats. And the knife was ready just in case.

Did you ever call the officers and find out what happened to the guy? Also honestly carrying pepper spray isn’t a bad idea at all with how the laws are in MN like others have mentioned.

In this state I’ve basically come to the conclusion that if I fire my weapon at another human for any reason (even to save my own life or my family’s life while in emminent danger of being killed), I am likely going to prison. That’s just the Minnesota BS way regardless of what the law says, your training, etc.

“I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by six”

Actually I’d like my chances in a trial here in Minnesota. It only takes 1 person that thinks like lots of people on this site.

Just don’t defend yourself in the red zones. AKA stay out of the red zones.

My district office had absolutely no record. Referred me to dispatch. They found the case number and referred me to the records office, who finally gave me the names and numbers of 4 of the responding officers. Left a message with the one who I believe was the first on scene that I spoke with yesterday.

A knife is the absolute worst self defense weapon. If you have to try and get a knife out the fight is probably already over. I understand a gun may not be for you (I had a CC and let mine lapse) but get the pepper spray or get yourself a tactical baton. At least you can keep some distance between you and an attacker.

First rule of self defense is get the hell out of the area to somewhere safe. Second rule is to keep distance between you and an attacker. You are up close and personal with a knife. It also probably won’t stop an attacker if they are high.

I keep a tactical baton in all my cars and on me if I feel it’s needed. Along the river it’s needed based upon my experience.

I’m looking at my options. A knife was all I had available this morning.

Would not be high on my list, But better than nothing. All the points you made are valid though. A handgun is not for everyone. I’m just glad its a choice for those who prefer it.

Pepper spray is a legit option, same with bear spray. Bear spray is just a large canister which would stink. But ain’t many guys fighting past bear spray

I have a handgun at home but I realized CC wasn’t for me. I’ve done a fair amount of self defense training and you find out that in many cases guns make the situation go from bad to worse. Not always the case but most people have never shot in a life or death situation so you have to be very honest with yourself if you could actually shoot.

Pepper spray or batons allow you to inflict some serious damage quickly so you can get out of the situation.

Sorry to hear about the encounter DW. I had a pretty scary one at night along the river which prompted me to start asking the same questions you are.

Is it really the police that fail to act or is it because the DA (especially Hennepin County) will not prosecute.

Curious why you stayed there … did he block your vehicle from leaving. I would have left the scene and as I drove away called the cops and let them know about the guy … so they hopefully prevent reoccurrence.

If this is Minneapolis or St Paul… why walk the MS river bank … to be honest that area was a bit sketchy 30+ years ago. Why not walk the Parkway or around one of the lakes ?

Going back, bringing a knife … I would say a couple of poor decisions.

Bad things happen at times because of random acts (wrong place at the wrong time), but often bad things happen because people make bad decisions … this is across all facets of life and not just encounters with others.

Flight is most often the best course of action. It works. Recognizing a bad situation before it escalates is another route to avoiding this all together. Some people have a better sense of avoidance than others.

Pepper spray or taser (if legal). Knife … really after you said he was a giant man ?

That’s a pretty common spot on the river to walk the shoreline. Maybe going back was questionable but I wouldn’t consider that a sketchy spot at all.

I lived in Minneapolis for 3 years and married a Minneapolis woman and thus still visit there quite often over the past 30+ years. Still say Nokomis, Harriet, Calhoun, and the Parkway would better options, but hey …

Brittman— you’re welcome to your opinion but your criticism won’t deter me. Saint Paul. This is where I have lived for over 20 years. I have spent hundreds of days and nights on this stretch of shoreline and I’m not going to let 1 idiot keep me from it. This is my home. Most days we walk down to river from home. Proximity to the river, hidden falls, Crosby, minnehaha, and fort snelling state park played a huge role in purchasing our home and spending time down there is a big part of my life.

The guy was standing an inch from my front bumper the entire time. I could not have moved the vehicle without contacting him. If he would’ve escalated things further that was certainly on the table, but as it stood I was reasonably content to wait for the police to arrive and let them deal with him. It was an uncomfortable 15 minutes but not enough to justify running him over.

Also I went a few miles further downstream today than yesterday, didn’t return to the same exact spot.

You answered my questions … guy blocked your vehicle. You went to a different location on the next day. Thank you. Hope your next trips are less troublesome.

Things change overtime. I have relatives that lived about 3/4 mile from the 3rd precinct. After living there 35 years everything changed … most places they visited .. were all gone. They were reluctant to move until their son said we won’t be bringing our kids to stay overnight at your house anymore.

I am still in South Minneapolis and the Highland (SP) area at least a day or two a month. Not where I wanted to live or raise my kids, but I can definitely see the appeal.

I hear you. I’m in highland 2 blocks off the river boulevard and access to the park. I do understand everything changes but for the most part this still feels like the neighborhood we moved into 20 years ago.

I was born and raised in S. Mpls 3rd precinct. I moved out 30 years ago when it started getting bad. It brings me to tears when I have to drive thru my old neighborhood. The people running that once great city just infuriates me.
It’s very sad to hear what happened to you Dirtywater, but it seems to be an everyday occurrence in todays world.
My advice is not a gun or knife, it’s a for sale sign.

Sorry EPG but this just doesn’t jive. I’ve been in S MPLS for 23 years and have never felt unsafe or felt like my neighborhood was somewhere we needed to leave. I have friends in the suburbs who have had their homes broken into in broad daylight while they were home…bad stuff happens anywhere.

I’m with DW…we love our neighborhood and the area around us. I know the city isn’t for everyone but it’s not the cesspool people on IDO make it out to be.

I do agree the city council is a major problem but that has started to change slightly. The “defund the police” movement showed a lot of residents that the city council is completely devoid of common sense. It still needs a lot of work though.
