Keep the Weber Kettle, buy as big of a Weber gas grill as you can afford. Done.

Darn good advice there. 10 years with that setup until I got the Kamado. Nothing I couldn’t do.

Small variation at the family lake place. Old school kettle for searing steaks or other direct heat applications. Pellet (Green Mountain) for smoking, roasting chickens, and other indirect ideas.

I have the big easy grill fairly enepensive, it’s smoker, grill, and roaster all in one it’s a infrared grill and is amazing, it’s not the biggest, but it cooks amazing for a cheap grill.

I cleaned the winters leaves off my back porch yesterday. Noticed my grill was full of leaves too. I opened the lid and raked out as much as I could with a stick in case there was a critter in there. Got most of it out, so I felt pretty safe reaching in there and scooping out the rest of the leaves. As I was pulling out a big double handfull of leaves my fingers sunk into the mass and felt something furry and wiggling. Needless to say I didn’t hang onto it very long, but flung it as far away as fast as possible. After looking at my fingers for bite marks, I realized it was 2 baby squirrels. They were fully developed and able to survive outside the grill. But, it sure was exciting there for a few seconds.

Seeing I would have lit the grill and burned the leaves those furry critters did OK.

If you are considering pellet smokers, I just bought a rectec and couldn’t be happier with it.

Holds a ton of food and holds a ridiculously steady temperature as well.

Amazing customer service as well, the owners put their business cards in the box with their personal cell phone numbers on them. You can call them day or night, weekend, holiday, whenever. Start reading reviews out there and they are pretty amazing.

Comparing this to the traegars you see in costco or something is night and day. A little more expensive than the comparably sized traegar, but build quality isn’t even close, not to mention the controller on the rectec keeps the temperature sooo steady. Holds 40 lbs of pellets instead of 20, I could go on.

I got mine in february and I’ve done a half dozen pork butts(carnitas and bbq pulled pork), pork loin, beef jerky multiple times, tons of chicken wings(awesome on indirect heat), smoked pecans, etc.

Did you get the Rectec searing unit? I’m wondering how that works, propane, electric or open flame.

I did not, I have a gas grill that I use for searing. The grill grates just go in the smoker and you turn up the temperature to max.

I’ve heard they grates work pretty well, but still don’t get as hot as a gas grill would and it takes longer to get up to temp. If I really want to sear something I’ll reverse sear on the gas grill, or just do it on the stovetop with a cast iron pan(nothing beats cast iron for searing).

I don’t think pellet smokers will ever really be top notch searing devices, but that’s okay! I still use my gas grill for hot dogs and steaks/burgers most of the time.
