Lots of you guys must be doing this, so let’s see them! Helix 5 and Helix 7 open water units converted to ice units.
Also, maybe tell use why you chose the route you took.

Havent done it yet, but I hear a Vexilar Pro Pack carrying case fits a Humminbird Helix 7 perfectly. Probably just roll with that and a 5 gallon pail.

The propack will work but have fun getting it into a pail! )

Needed a way to mount unit on old pontoon at remote cabin and keep portable for ice fishing. Used old cutting board as base plate to mount on Genz box

This is my old one and the one I made for my buddy. I am making improvements and building a new one soon.

Mine is done almost exactly like Traxlers above. After making a mount similar to get the gimbal bracket to fit, I realized i could have screwed the gimbal to the back side of the box without an additional bracket…I also have it in a Genz soft pack. I use the Helix in this pack in the summer also in my canoe and duck boat with the open water suction cup ducer. The soft pack keeps all the cords neat since the open water ducer cable is LONG. I also added a Marcum swing arm to the genz pack. I have a Vexilar pack, Marcum arm and Humminbird unit…

I used the clam flasher bag and it fits my Elite 7 perfectly. It also fits a 1/2 3700 Plano box perfectly.

    Nice work guys.

Tuma, That is a sweet setup. Do you have any interest in making an extra one to sell?

Thank you. I love it. Put that in one hand and an auger in the other and you have everything you need to hole hop.
You can have my old one after I make my new one. Hopefully it will be sometime this month.

Yeah, everything you need in one hand and the auger in the other. I bet it makes hole hopping easier. Thanks for the offer. Let me know if you want to get rid of the old one when you get your new one done.

I see you are using a new marcum shuttle. How did you mount the recon to the shuttle?
    Thanks

So I’ve been following these Helix threads, and just want to confirm what may be a stupid question. If I have a new Helix 5 G2 and want to use it on ice, I will just need a power cable, battery and shuttle to use the GPS? And if I want to use it as a fish finder also, I will need the XI 9 20 transducer? Is that right, or am I missing something?

Yes that transducer will work, however it will not have the chirp capabilities that the unit has. XI 9 1521 will give you chirp. Like I said in a previous thread Hodgesmarine.com has the best price I have found at about $70.

Pretty much exactly right. But if you want to use as a fishfinder, you will also need to download and install the latest software version, which i think is 1.540

Part of the reason i asked this question is because I made a shuttle for my helix 7 and it does fit into a bucket. Im’ putting the final pre-finishing touches on it today and will send out some pics. )

I finally got my Helix 7 shuttle complete.

I really like that I can still have the infinite adjustability with the RAM mount and it can just go back and forth from ice shuttle to boat with ease.

About $25 to build just the shuttle which sure beats $100-150+ for the Humminbird branded shuttle, and I built it myself.

I can already think of things I probably would have done differently, but for this year, it will work and maybe next year, I’ll work up the energy for take #2.

I’d be happy to hear your thoughts.

Nice job gotalunker. That looks great. I started to build my new one this weekend. Adding spots for more rods and more tackle. For some reason that stuff keeps piling up.

Nice work Gotalunker! Did you cut out the grips on the handle or did you just tape it up with hockey tape? Also, if you wanted to post more pictures, I would like to see more of how that’s assembled.

Luttes, I don’t really have an pics of the assembly. But if you want, we can take that discussion offline to a private message and I’d be happy to explain my approach and give you the details of what I’d do differently.

The handle has wrapped with paracord and then over that is electrical tape.

Mounted my H7 G2 to the handle of the GenzBox and it balances well. Still waiting on the XI 9 1521 transducer to arrive.

After seeing Gotalunker’s build, I whipped this up last night in a few hours. It’ll get a strap for the battery, some holes for cables, and a coat of truck bed liner spray paint, and will be all set for ice! Wormdunker, you can find the xi 9 1521 at hodgesmarine dot com for $72 free shipping. Can’t really beat the price. Let me know if you have any questions!

I ordered my xi 9 1521 from hodgesmarine two Saturdays ago. I called in and they said it was on back order, they’d hopefully have stock to ship out today or tomorrow.
