I have 3 quotes looking for some input. All 3 quotes are within $1000 of each, so not much difference.

    Atlas Castlebrook
    CertainTeed Landmark
    GAF Timberline HDZ (Certified Installer)

I think I am kind of leaning towards Certainteed.

I had CertainTeed Landmark put on my house in early April. I chose the Pewter color and they look great. So far so good with all the windy days we’ve had in the last month.

The GAF or CT are better shingles.
The MAIN difference will be in the companies that install them.
How well they protect your property, crew habits, and proper installation are the MAJOR factors.
$1k is negligible if you are not happy with the work.
Pick the company you like the best.

I had CertainTeed put on our new build. They outsell every other shingle by a long shot at our local yard. They seem to be a good blend of quality and look that falls somewhere between the most expensive types out there, and the cheap crappy ones.

Unfortunately the price of shingles (like everything) has taken a substantial jump. We bought ours last September, and I think the yard today sells them for about 60% more than it did then.

Landmarks. Plus they have the best warranty.
Make sure your installer is certified by whichever manufacturer you use.
And one of my biggest pet peeves is people that say they have a lifetime warranty when if you read the fine print it is not it’s 50 years

I love installing Certainteed. Hands down my top choice. 2nd would be Malarky. GAF are not worth the money. They are a cheap shingle hiding in an expensive wrapper. Castlebrooks are okay, but definitely a Menards product.

Man, I really like Menards and now I only go there after seeing Home Depot’s “woke” employee training. But it sucks that I know EXACTLY what you mean when you say “definitely a menards product”. Maybe one day they’ll ee it to and start improving. Lumber yard full of bananas

    Charles,
Make sure they have one of these and they should give you the 4 star warranty for free.
They need to register it online and you should receive a hard copy shortly after.

That should be a line item in the contract!!!

Make sure after that roof replacement you let your insurance company know about it. Some insurance companies give a nice discount on your home insurance for new roofs. The discount if often Bigger if its a class 4 or class 5 rated shingle. Maybe something to keep in mind when deciding what shingle to go with.

In the process of getting a new roof. The company we are going with primarily uses Owens Corning. Since there are supply issues with getting the same class of shingle we have (Oakridge) they said they would upgrade us to the Duration line for no extra cost. Or we can choose the GAF Timberline HDZ series for no extra cost. Anyone know which would be the better product to go with?

I had Owens Corning put on last month.

The way I figure it, living in MN you’re going to have hail damage every 20 or so years anyway, so does it really matter what type of shingles you put on? Probably will get ripped for saying that…

After CertainTeed already screwed me over once, I’ll never use them again. They sold a junk product and wouldn’t stand behind it.

I had my roof replaced several years ago with the Timberline and I have been very impressed with them. One thing I just recently noticed however (not sure how I didnt notice it earlier), but it seems the garage shingles are different than the ones on the house. They almost dont even look like laminated shingles! WTF. I stood there and stared at the garage and the house roof for like 5 minutes trying to figure out if my eyes were deceiving me LOL

I asked our insurance company the discount tied to new shingles … regular and Class 4. It would take about 10 years for the Class 4 upgrade cost to be paid for by the discount … and by then I suppose the discount goes away ?

New shingles resulted in about a 15% drop in home insurance per our company quote. Did not ask for how long that discount runs.

I good customer of mine has this going on at his house as well. I asked him about it, because he is very particular about things like this, and he said he has lived on that farm for 74 years now, and he gets the garage and house roofed at the same time, just like his dad does and they fade differently every time. At about 5-7 years you start to see the difference. Depends on how much rain they get, he thinks, and the fact the roofs are different pitches. The garage is not as steep of pitch stays darker longer, the house gets a “bleached out” look to it.
