Lesson Learned – Measuring For A New Steering Cable

I’m replacing the steering in my Lund Tyee 5.3 with a new rack/nfb. I went online and did some research on how to properly measure for the cable. I didn’t pull the old cable because I still wanted to fish while I was waiting for the new system (My first mistake).

(Middle of steering column to gunwale + dash to transom + gunwale to cable connection on centered motor. Then add 6 inches)

Well, after measuring 4 times to be sure, I came up with 14.5′ and then rounded up to the nearest foot which would be 15′. I received the new system yesterday, pulled the old cable, and low and behold it’s only 14′. The mistake I think I made was measuring to the “center” of the the gunwale (mine are 6 1/2″ across) rather than the inside edge. That would have knocked off 6 or 7 inches bringing the total to just under 14′, rounding up to the correct length of 14′.

Lesson – You’ll lose less fishing days by pulling and measuring the original cable vs returning and waiting for the second shipment with the right one.
