There is a movement among Ice Castle owners (a group named ICOG) called #heavierout

It’s main focus is to encourage and spread the word about keeping our lakes free of trash left on the ice, including stuff that isn’t yours. Something many of us have been doing for years.

If you hauled it out there, you can haul it back. That includes digested dog food. If you see a slobs trash on the ice, take the 5 seconds and grab it. The lake will appreciate it.

I might be naïve, I know their are bad apples who don’t care, but I think some of the problem is from folks just not being prepared. They fish until dark and don’t have enough lights to check the ice before they leave. They don’t carry a trash bag and cans, bags, etc gets blow out of sight. It snows and they cant see what is buried. Or maybe they just really need to poop and hi-tail it out without taking the time to check what was left behind!

Take some time, plan ahead, help others, this stuff aint hard

I’m out on the lake a lot. In my experience most permanent Ice House fishermen are clean and courteous. But it only takes a few bad apples to really mess up a lake.

Just this past weekend I had two houses move in on the lake I was fishing that I didn’t recognize. They were Extremely Loud blasting off explosives in the middle of the night, multiple loud trucks coming and going all hours of the night. They were driving by our houses and in between our houses less than 10 feet away. They drove over our generator cords we had by our house many times. And when they left there was trash all over.

I was just saying last week how great everyone has been this year. Nothing to complain about. Then these guys show up.

    That would make me mad!

its not jsut an ice problem as we are all aware. But its infuriating.

we have a conservation club where you pay $100 a year to join. its not open to the public and even members will leave crap all over the ice. its not usually an issue in the summer, campers and shore fisherman really don’t leave stuff. but on the ice? crap everywhere. the groundskeeper is usually beside himself. He lives on the property and he’s like if nothing else is going on i scope ice fisherman and have to get on my gator and acost them before they leave the gates and make them go pick it up. They just added a no tolerance policy where your membership will be revoked.

We were up in Faribult area this past weekend and when you got around shanty town you could see places were permanents had been and the trash that was left. I’m sure tons of non permanent people also leave crap all over too.

I do a ton of shore fishing in the QCA as well as frequent trips into iowa and fish the interior rivers. Spillways in iowa around desmoines look like 3rd world country rivers with all of the trash. its amazing. our spillways in the QCA have issues too but it was nothign like i’d seen before at saylorville.

I was going to make a comment earlier about how our waterways look compared to some of the foreign countries I have visited for work. There is no comparison. Ours are far superior even if there is some trash on the ice. Go to a major metro area in Brazil, India, or southeast Asia and then you’ll see how bad it can get.

There is a bill in the Iowa Legislature that would allow the DNR to suspend all of your hunting, fishing, trapping, camping and state owned cabin rentals for a year if convicted of littering on DNR land/ice.

I get it! its super gross however you are bringing up another point what about dog owners that don’t pick up after their dog? Spring is in the air and its time to smell your neighbors dog crap. I get it people poop on the ice what about all the run off that comes off of your neighbors poop filled lawn.

Yes spring time is gross with the dog crap in the lawn, could not agree more. But having a mess in your own property is a lot different that leaving stuff all over the ice that other people can run into if they are fishing after you.
