Left in disbelief

After a Sunday afternoon outing with my 7 year old I was left in disbelief at the amount of litter left on the lake from the weekend. Then the cherry on top is trying to explain to my 7 year old “that isn’t Dog poop” just sent me over the edge.

Then I talk to some other people I know who were out on the lake over the weekend and they saw the same thing.

Honestly I wish for there to be 4 feet of snow and less than 12 inches of ice on the lake so all the Permi owners keep there garbage and poop off of the lake. Come on people. Now I understand that this issue isn’t 100% Permi owners and could of been from people in portables and hubs but realistically we know who most of this came from.

It’s just downright RUDE and LAZY… So disappointing

I wish they focused more enforcement on this, so gross! Especially in the spring when you try to be a good citizen and grab that floating trash….

Dont lump everyone together. When i moved my house the other day i drove a complete circle back to where i was just so i didnt miss something that may have gotten underneath. That being said i drove by a house that was unoccupied that had so much garbage around you know they aint gonna clean it all up.

It’s a shame there are so many slobs out there. We have a park with a beach, fishing pier, etc near our house. Last spring/summer, I was home more due to COVID and made an effort to clean the place up. I’d take my dog over for walks 1-2x per day and bring bags to pick up trash. Most days, I would run out of bags to put garbage in, and there are literally garbage cans all over this park. I just don’t get it. flame

I was out plenty early this year and never saw any garbage when it was only walk out and wheelers and snowmobiles. Once the Permi’s are out and people are ice camping then there’s litter and crap everywhere. Thanks for doing your part. We picked up multiple items yesterday to try and help.

It is all entitlement. People believe they are so great that they are entitled to have others pick up after them.

That’s funny, I’ve been to red twice and lotw 3 times so far with hundreds of wheelhouses around and haven’t seen a single piece of trash this year

Thank you for cleaning up after yourself Jeremy. With more people outdoors its probably not going to improve anytime soon.

I don’t think the finger pointing or blame does any good. I wish enforcement was much better as well. Slobs are all over the place. Took my kid sledding at a popular hill by my house and there were 5 broken sleds next to a public trash can. Not a dumpster a small park trash can. As if whomever pulls that trash can haul all the broken sleds with.
You brought it with you can certainly bring it home. Doesn’t seem that hard.

No, they are just filthy slobs. I know a few guys that have so much $hit in their cars it looks like a bomb went off. You think their house is any different?

I was out on the ice Presidents’ Day on a twin cities lake. Only person out there and a dnr officer walked out…..it was like 21 below but we chatted for a bit. There are 130 officers to cover the whole state. He said they spend all spring on the ice cleaning up peoples trash.

They don’t have enough manpower to police all of the idiots out there doing this stuff. He was out on the lake that morning because some one abandoned a small portable. I think it froze and they couldn’t get it out. Must’ve been 30 beer cans in and around it. WTH is wrong with people.

It’s a sad society we live in these days. It’s just getting worse each year. I feel 😢 for the future.

My car is always a mess. However, I don’t have the arrogance and entitlement to leave the trash from my messy car outside and expect someone else to pick it up. Entitlement is much worse than being messy.

Help the COs out. Take a photo, include the fish, it’s license and GPS coordinates. Send it to the local CO. If it’s a portable you can often get the license plate number. Not a big fan of being a snitch but even less enamored of all of the trash being left on the ice.

Ban all houses from being left over-night for a season. Maybe people would take the hint.

Ban all cars from driving down the road so they don’t throw cig butts and garbage out the window also.

LOL sounds good to me , i have a 1/4 mile frontage road to my property that every year i could pick up several 33 gal trash bags full of beer cans, pop cans , McDonalds , whiskey bottles and the list goes on. Because i have to get waders on because its swamp . For a number of years i would pick it all up. Now i pick up what i can reach without getting soaked . This has been going on for 20 plus years , yup people , some people are pure slobs !

I know what you mean. Doing lawn care work at businesses along roads and the amount of crap people throw out the window is terrible. Sometimes takes longer picking up all the trash than actual mowing

I’m out on the lake a lot. In my experience most permanent Ice House fishermen are clean and courteous. But it only takes a few bad apples to really mess up a lake.

Just this past weekend I had two houses move in on the lake I was fishing that I didn’t recognize. They were Extremely Loud blasting off explosives in the middle of the night, multiple loud trucks coming and going all hours of the night. They were driving by our houses and in between our houses less than 10 feet away. They drove over our generator cords we had by our house many times. And when they left there was trash all over.

I was just saying last week how great everyone has been this year. Nothing to complain about. Then these guys show up.

The biggest spreader of garbage though, has to be garbage trucks.

I’ve called over a dozen times to various companies about their trucks blowing trash absolutely everywhere. I mean on my short gravel road alone they drop without a doubt hundreds of pieces of garbage annually. Hundreds has to be an understatement. I’ve followed our local garbage trucks watching garbage blow out the top like confetti for miles on end.

The garbage companies could care less. It must be nice to own a garbage company and never actually have to pay to legally empty a truck. flame

Could a law be written in a way that allows no loose rubbish on the ice? Everything must be in a trash bag. If it is not, it is considered littering. Is leaving human waste on a lake illegal?

Maybe calls to the TIP line are in order.

Quite a number of lake associations do an annual voluntary spring clean up when the ice melts. A lot of this trash floats and ends up on shore lines so there is at least some effort to clean up later. Similar to when you see the criminals doing their public service or adopt-a-road volunteers cleaning up along the highways. I’m not saying that this is the best solution because prevention is better and if everyone just cleaned up after themselves the problem wouldn’t exist, but its something.

I’m looking at this kinda like shoplifters and the retail biz. Even though you see someone pocket something you can’t approach them until they pass the last cash register.

A shack can have trash all around but until they drive away and leave it all they have to say is they’ll pick it up when they head out.

I use my truck bed as a shed when I’m out. Small bag gets full, into the big bag in the bed, pretty simple.

I’ve been to Red,LOW & Leech this year and haven’t seen any trash FWIW.

I’m out on the ice everyday in Central Minnesota. Garbage on the ice isn’t any worse this year than others. It still pisses me off. When the snow melts I take my atv out for a garbage run. It’s twofold. I remove garbage, and I get to keep the good stuff people left behind. Tip ups, tackle boxes, chisels are just a few of the finds.

Lets also be clear that just because there is some loose cans or other small items on the ice around the house does not mean they are not going to clean it up. While I try to keep up and have everything in a bag, I will say when we pack up and leave there is nothing left on the ice except maybe some dead minnows. It has nothing to do with portable vs wheel house it has to do with character that’s it plain and simple!

Hire some enforcement officers (strictly for garbage) and pay them commission!

I live on one of the lakes on the west side of the twin cities and it has seen quite a bit of traffic this year. There are spots where I won’t fish because I am not sure what is going to come up when I drill down. Next month we will do the annual cleanup to pick up stuff so that it doesn’t end up at the bottom or on the shore.
