Got to fish Saturday morning for a few hours with no luck. Tried Huddles reef and Chippewa point?, was marking fish but just couldn’t get any to commit. The day before our arrival they were shoveling mayflies off the beach of our resort so I grabbed some worms and forgot the leeches when I left. Had more than a few good whacks but no hookups dragging through grass in the 15′ range with floating jigheads. Nothing whatsoever with plain hook, spinners didn’t do a thing, nor a few other methods tried out. Couple pulls on the slip bobber in the 18′ range but again no hookups, really wish I had the leeches with.

Since my Dad sold his cabin in Pine River we haven’t made to many trips up nort, but with access to a trailer on Leech now it seems this may be a new goto. Looking forward to figuring it out. Kids absolutely loved the beach on Bear island.

Curious to anyone have luck this weekend and what methods worked for ya?

Maybe you should come to Mille Lacs, evidently you can throw anything out there catch walleyes. wink
Stick with what you’re trying, obviously it can take a little while to dial it in and when you time it I guess. Good luck and enjoy the time you have! waytogo

I spent a few hours Saturday and Sunday on Leech, ran all over, marked a lot of fish but only some very weak bites. Lack of wind and abundance of may flies seemed to slow things down a lot for me.

The bite can be less consistent out here this time of year, no doubt, but that’s what makes it a sport lol. I’m getting keepers in my tiny little shallow pet spots early morning and then pulling crawlers or cranks in a bit deeper water mid-day to keep things moving, and for picture fish. Slip bobbering cabbage weeds and rigging redtail chubs are putting a few in the boat too. No two days really come together the same. Some days we fish two spots and other days twenty-two. With a second shiner run, crayfish molt, young-of-the-year perch movements, mayfly hatch, etc., this is as complex of a walleye fishery as the state has, me thinks. There is no silver bullet this time of year, we just need to keep making adjustments until things happen. I try not to listen to other anglers too much though as most clues come from below the waterline, and outcomes surely can change with a single opening of the bail.

    Cheers and hook-sets!

Good report Phil and very well stated in keeping it all in perspective. And if it was all that easy, what sense of accomplishment would be realized? The harder they come, the better it feels to find that Golden walleye.

I’m glad to hear for once that it wasn’t just me who couldn’t catch a thing.
