Friday and Sunday’s walleye fishing was pretty decent. Friday we had strong north winds and rain most morning. It was not pleasant but the fish didn’t care and bit well. My quests were not keeping fish so we just had fun releasing walleyes all morning. We figured we boat close to 20 walleyes with the largest being just over 25”in the 3 hours we lasted. I didn’t fish Saturday. Today (Sunday) was a cold morning and a chilly boat ride. The numbers were about the same but it took twice the time. We had a decent wind and found the fish to be a little lazy in the beginning but as the day warmed the fish got active. Catching more slot then keepers, it took most the trip to get our limit but action was steady all day. Today’s high light was the first fish I’ve seen over the slot this season, a fat 27”. Both days saw the larger fish being a little shallower then the rest of the catch. Whereas the majority of fish were caught in 10ft the larger fish were plucked out of 8ft. Jigs are still producing for me and I have been spending most my time on large flats. Fish have seemed to be holding on the subtle depth changes, often whit only a depth change of a foot.
This is just my theory but 10 days ago the shiners were rumored to be done and not available much longer. Well that changed with a second shiner run and the bait shops have plenty. This could explain why I am getting walleyes in the same areas as I did 2 weeks ago. The shiners came back in and so did the walleyes,,, at least to the type areas I’m fishing. Water temps have been moving around all season. I had 65 on Friday on the big lake and 59 this morning warming to 61 by mid-day. I see the jig bite lasting a bit longer then I had thought earlier. Many years I have jigged walleyes up to Fourth of July, but its not always the case.
