Well what did you learn? My curiosity is roaring

I finally decided to test a jig that I made weedless with light wire and caught a bass and rockbass immediately once the jig cleared the weeds! No weeds were on the jig no matter how many times I cast to them

What’s more was using braid on a Pflueger spincast reel and 6′ ultralight rod for casting a 3/32 oz jig over 60′, rigged with a modified Kut Tail worm. Fish slammed it! This was proof that as long as the rod flex can handle the initial strike, braid allowed a good hookset at that distance and then playing the fish through weeds they dove into.

What it also proved was the great action of the KT tail when attached to a thicker grub body:

With my carpal tunnel wrist syndrome I need to switch to a spincast reel from spinning reel and most spincast reels don’t cast light lures tied to braid. The only reason this reel could was because of the heavier weight jig and underhand side arm casts. The reel exit hole is not as big as that of the Daiwa 100A Silvercast and line gets caught inside the cover when casting 1/16 oz jigs.

Another thing I found out was that I didn’t need a fluorocarbon leader seeing as how small in diameter the Kastking Superpower 8 lb test braid. I can pull the rowboat to a snag with that line!

Another discovery was the use of clear plastic lures either all clear or clear tail. Fish of all species bit:

    ..plus wacky rigged clear sticks:

Stubby tail grubs have done as good if not better than any action tail grubs – something I discovered and constantly prove true no matter where I fish them or what color:

Recently I caught a 3 lb grass carp on a Crappie Magnet grub – something I have never done. Occasionally catfish and the usual carp on lures – never grass carp!

The presence of grass carp explains the absence of weed beds in a lake I started fishing for the first time last month. Damn those things!

Another thing was discovering quality fish in two lakes I didn’t think had them and in July and at midday no less!

Is grass carp another name for sucker? Just asking. Would like to have that for some catfish bait.

I learned that when you are in a big boat and trying to dock up at Lord Fletchers you should wait until the boat gets closer to the dock so you don’t over reach and miss causing you to fall in the water in front of everyone and lose your brand new pair of ray bans. redface doah

I have over reached at the dock many times. Have gotten better at it the last few years.

    Good one Pout.

My friend learned that when the warden is about to give you a ticket for ignoring the ‘Road Closed, No trespassing” sign that you don’t tell him: “well we fished here all day yesterday without a problem” (because we ignored the sign yesterday too!) He learned this because I yelled at him ticket in hand when the warden left!

I learned (or at least my dad always tells me) that I’m educated beyond my level of intelligence.

Does anyone know what that means?

Funny Matt, sounds like something my dad would say.

I learned that when your boat is on a hill and a 500 gallon gas tank is at the bottom of the hill and you disconnect your boat from your truck that you might want to chock your wheels first. This is fun I have a lot of them! (scary)

    Spoon Minnow,
Nice post and pictures. When I had a 14 foot boat I spent a huge amount of time fishing crappies and sunfish on the smaller lakes. As I bought larger boats I abandoned those strategies and fish exclusively for walleyes. Now that I have more time I am starting to revert back 30 years ago and fishing more local lakes for bass, crappies, and sunnies. I see you even “wacky rigged” for sunnies, an interesting technique for sure. Now that my old favorite pan fish jig company, Falls Tackle went out of business you have breathed new life into my strategy, Thanks!

Thanks David – glad to share my discoveries with fellow fanatics and yes wacky rigged mini sticks have done well for all species. Found this out last year when I caught over a dozen bluegills in one area on the wacky rig. Here’s one where I removed the curl tails and joined the bodies:

It also worked rigged the usual way:

Note: for mini stick or grub wacky rigging, a light jig head is alway needed to provide that incredible wobble Senkos have on the drop.

    These have also worked:

Yesterday also proved informative. I hadn’t used my weedless jigs and knew it was just a matter of time until I tried them in weeds. This one I made using Salt Water wire:

Crappie and a green sunfish also had no problem with the weed guard or for biting a 4″ Kut Tail worm for that matter:
